i need to change the leaking rocker gaskets on my 4.0 lpg p38.
is this an easy job as ther seems to be a lot of stuff in the way?
any tips?
do i have to torque the covers on etc.
thanks

hi easy job ! phelum camber needs to be loosen off but by tilting it you can remove covers without dismantling it . i never touqed bolts down as i havent got a wrench just tighten down till felt pressure on socket and they havent leaked yet in over 2 years.

It's not too bad a job but you would do well to get some silicon or blue gasket sealer to help when reassembling. Make a note of where each spark plug lead goes to and pull off to one side, undo the 4 bolts to lift the cover off, it can be a bit fiddly as the cover needs to come up over the rockers. Clean both surfaces of any oil or old gasket material. Now put a thin film of silicon or blue gasket, just enough to allow the gasket to hold in place as you offer up the cover, more often than not it gets knocked off at your first attempt. Check fully that the gasket is seated correctly before inserting the bolts.

My rocker gaskets are leaking something terrible. They weren't really leaking at all, but I got out of the motor one day and could see smoke, plus it was absolutely reeking. Opened the bonnet in a state of mild alarm, to find oil trickling down from the back end of the rocker gasket onto the exhaust manifold heat shield, from which was burning off to great effect. It uses hardly any oil, so I guess it looks worse than it is, but for good practice I need to do the replacement.

Still, I'll miss the way people turn round with that "is it going to explode?" look on their face.

The later rubber rocker gaskets do not need sealant and they have steel inserts where the screws go through, so you can't overtighten them. Just pull them down until the screws are tight. No need to tighten them to the torque figures unless you are a purist!!
