Hello there,

Based in North Dorset and have a Defender 90 (20+ years old) sitting on my driveway that I have almost pulled the gearbox out of....... I'm sure I will be bugging you guys on how best to get the replacement in.....

Not looking forward to it and have never done it before so am very apprehensive.

Am loathed to take to a garage as want to see if I can do it myself.

Any starting points are gratefully received.

Cheers,

Cameron - Gillingham (Dorset)

Bonjour!

Drained out the transmission fluid,
Disconnected the top up pipe,
Disconnected drive shafts,
Removed supports underneath,
Have removed all but two of the bolts around the bell housing so it is about ready to drop,
Disconnected the cable that is attached up in the engine bay,

It is now at a point where I will need to get it supported before I start undoing bolts that are holding it all in place.

Have the entire gearbox and bell housing replacement already so now am at a bit of a cross roads as what to do.

Nervous? Yup!

Most people remove the seat box and floors and use an engine crane in through one of the doors. If you don't have an engine crane you can either rent one or buy a second hand one of eBay and then sell it on again when you're done, that way you shouldn't loose any money
