My brother's 96 300Tdi won't go into reverse - all other gears are fine and engage normally .
He's calling to me later on to 'have a look' - any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Maybe the detent plunger springs on the rod next to the gearbox are worn, corroded or just in need of a clean, this would stop you being able to select reverse because it is not unlocking the reverse gear, or locking the 1st rod properly so that reverse can be engaged.

oh aye... that would be a good thing to start with! Right, if it still don't go in then it coud be your plungers ;)

Thanks for all your replies -
(a) it wouldn't go into reverse with engine stopped or running
(b) the clutch disc/pressure plate/fork /slave cylinder/rear seal/spigot brg etc. were all changed by myself about 20K mls ago ( I sold him the Disco )

Everything is working again - he hit a bump on the way home this evening and everything is fine again ,but for how long I don't know.
A lot of his driving is on rough forest tracks as part of his job and he is delighted with the Disco's off road abilities but as he found out today you don't realise how essential reverse is until it goes .
He found that 4th was not quite right while rev was unavailable so we'll have to check out linkages etc and maybe something will turn up.
