1996 range rover hse 4.6 v8

could someone please tell me what is involved in replacing the becm (large computer under drivers seat)

firstly can second hand ones be 'recycled'?

are these plug and play ~ ie take one from another car put it in mine and its all hunky dory

or are they coded to the vehicle requiring a visit to the dealer?

in either situation do they need to have the matching key chip to operate the imobiliser or is the imobilser in one of the other computers.

thanks for your help

The BECM controls pretty much everythingon the car!

2ndhand units can be checked/re-set to your car, but having just had mine done......be bloody careful!!!!!!!!!
Garage wanted to use Essex guy that said he needed Reg and Vin numbers then it's plug n play. I knew it was more involved (although to not the Full extent) so pretty much Insisted that Irish did it.
He went outa his way, got a unit from regular source (has stock back in Ireland btw), stripped and checked it, then came down and fitted/coded it to the car. Lees than £400 all-in! :):):)
Stealers can't/won't touch 2nd hand; looking around £700 plus coding/fitting .... no change outa £1,200
Send a PM to Irishrover, believe me if he can't help, you got 2.5 ton of scrap!!
