I am in the process of replacing the very dead l series at present with one out of rover 220. I have already discovered the bell housing for the box needs changing oinvestorsver & the pump /injectors , sump .So should then be back on the road.Only thing is the disc shields on the front need replacing would u guys reuse the good bearings or replace?
 
Ive replaced injectors in a hippo with used ones from scrappy taken from a rover 220 SDI and they fitted and worked fine.....Are you sure you need to swap these ?
 
Be interesting to see just whats needed to do an engine transplant. Have wondered before if its possible as they are the same basic motor and IMO a superior engine to the TD4. ( I run on bio diesel and TD4 wont )
 
I buy biodiesel made from waste veg oil from a friend at £1 a litre, I have to say he is good at this and very knowledgeable, therefore his fuel I regard highly. When I first used it I simply put 40 litres into a nearly empty tank (engine already warmed up) and drove it. It ran perfectly from word go, only down side was it starting on the 2nd cranking cycle instead of the first.
The L series engine runs fine without any modifications on Bio-diesel...just pour n drive.
My spec currently is tho...... Egr by-passed, ....... Exhaust De-Catted, ...... FWD prop removed. Large K&N type air filter fitted in place of original restricted airflow airbox.
Returns a genuine 40 MPG more on a run....starts first crank cycle now Iv got my 4th glow plug working from behind the inj pump.
Power wise its VERY strong torque wise, much better than standard and turbo spins up fast and my SEAT OF PANTS dyno reports much more power.
Exhaust emmissions wise is ultra clean........ does not just pass MOT emmissions it returns virtually zero.
Future plans.....big intercooler once I suss out which one from scrap yard is best (tight git)

Does original poster plan on using the 220 gearbox with a freelander bellhousing fitted ? Is it really that simple ?
 
Like every job this transplant is a learning process.... The injectors in the donor engine were marked 200 & the freelander ones 260, so i am changing them .The pump on the rover manual & the freelander electronic. The adaptor plate for the gearbox is different as the inlet exhaust turbo set ups differ. The gearbox the same just bellhousing different. Sump is deeper...another change along with oil pick up. Oil pump to turbo pipe larger bore so changing pump.Oil cooler/throat unit differs. Other than that ...... I brought the freelance with a knocked lump which had a con rod out the side.....nice! Had the Rover so thought make a good car out of two heaps! The donor engine has done 90k good runner for last two years. Replacing belts , clutch, glow plugs etc. Would not want to be doing the job without the freelander parts would be an expensive nightma:eek:re
 
You reckon there would be the option off leaving the rover 200 box in situ and do away with the freelander G/Box and IRD. wonder if the drive shafts would fit or need them cutting and rewelding to a diff length, balance up and away lol... Assuming your FWD of course.
 
DONT FORGET to replace the 4th glow plug from behind inj pump while pumps off ! Put a good quality branded one in to.
 
Yes glow plugs yes on early l engines only 3 plugs must have been rover cut backs! Need to check what power goes to the 3 compared to freelander 4. On the subject of drive shafts the rover is not as wide as freelander so would say youd have problems there.
 
Ive seen drive shafts cut and rewelded back longer haveing been sleeved in the middle. You have to be capable of welding to a high standard and accuracy getting the shaft straight. Then they need balancing in same way you would a prop shaft.
On gearbox and bell housing front....are the gear ratios the same on feelander and 200 boxes ?
With glow plug issue your options are leave at 3 glow plug head ( most freelanders have only 3 working even on a 4 plug head ) OR swap heads over.
 
Yeah not bothering with head change at present. I am going to build up a spare engine & use the later head on that. The offside driveshaft would be about 4 1/2 foot long! Not for me thanks.
 
yeah I guess the shaft would be longer than normal but im sure it would work....interesting hippo it would make lol.
As for head, if your doing the belts the only extra expense would be a head gasket.
which power version of the 220 do you have.....the higher powered engine has the larger intercooler on it.
