It would be good to find a known good one to try before shelling out but I am Billy no mates when it comes to TD5 owners.
Some available on E-bay (not mates) and at used dealers but you do not know what you are trying out good or bad ones.

Yes, good thread but I have been through all of that trying to cure the initial issues.
I suppose I have two issues now-
1 Is the original AAP sensor a good one or is the ECU running on a default programme?
2 If AAP sensors are out of their boxes how would you tell if it is a MHK100600 of a MHK100600L because I have looked at a number of images on google and have not seen one with the L on the label.
 
Actually, mine would not be any good, as it is the later aap ending in 820.

I wonder what year it changed ?

I think it was 2002 they made a change also from 3 connections to 4 connections and the air box lid changed so you cant mix them up.
 
An update-
The new AAP from and MG Rover supplier (MHK100600) is definitely an issue the driveability is poor with an hesitation in power at 45 to 50 MPH and reduced torque at lower revs in all gears. Using an Hawkeye diagnostic reader on live data this AAP indicates 98.9Kpa at rest with very small fluctuations whilst driving up to 99.2Kpa. No fault codes show after a drive.

The original AAP sensor fitted removes the hesitation at 45 to 50MPH and improves the torque at low revs in all gears. Using an Hawkeye diagnostic reader on live data this AAP indicates 98.9Kpa at rest with very small fluctuations whilst driving up to 99.2Kpa. This is identical readings. No fault codes show after a drive.

Disconnect the AAP sensor the hesitation at 45 to 50 MPH is not present the driveability is reduced very slightly lower torque at low revs not nearly as much as when the MG Rover AAP sensor is fitted but never the less it is felt when driving. Using an Hawkeye diagnostic reader on live data this AAP indicates 100.0Kpa at rest with no fluctuations whilst driving continues at 100.0Kpa (as you would expect). Fault code Low Ambient Air Pressure is recorded.

Has anyone/could someone disconnect/ed a known good AAP sensor and use the default ECU setting to see how it affects the vehicle driveability.
