Just had a stone fly up and put a big star-like chip in my (previously perfect) windscreen.

I don't have windscreen cover on my insurance policy..

So, go on- upset me by revealing how much a heated front screen for a '95 HSE is! I don't think it will pass another MoT the way it is. (annoyed).

Have a look on autoglass website, they have a guide to what is repairable and what isn't. If its close to the edge of the screen then it can't be done. Likewise if the size of the chip is over a certain diameter etc.

I had mine chipped a few weeks ago, they managed to fix it (under insurance). To be honest its still fairly obvious, but should pass an MOT. If not then I'll have to have my screen replaced.

Thanks for the advice all, the chip is star-shaped and I'd say about a cm2 in size (quite big). It's in the middle of the screen, typically on my (drivers') side.

Incidentally, a Discovery flicked the stone that hit it!

What annoys me even more is the previous owner of the car replaced the screen less than two months back, bad luck!

why not see how much it is to stick windscreen cover on your insurance premium, im waiting till feb to put it on mine so i can sort my chipped screen.

Might be an idea Tommo, I will ring them next week. I suppose most people wouldn't bother to sort it until MoT time, but if it's repairable, I don't want to risk it getting bigger!

Not having much luck with glass.. last month a stone put a 30cm crack in the screen of my other car, madness!

Visited Autoglass in Tonbridge yesterday. He said my chip wasn't repairable due to it being 11mm in size.

He then quoted me £936 for a new replacement :hysterically_laughi shame the cars not worth much more than that!!

Will have to look into other options :(

In the old days I remember lorry drivers had a device, a little brace made from some heavy rubber that propped at an angle between the windscreen and the dash. It was said to absorb and transfer the vibration shock from when a stone hits the glass.

Tell him to squint as he looks at his tape measure, 10mm is repairable and is in fact i believe acceptable on MOT providing it is not in area A. New heated screens for Range Rover are around the £325.00 mark in the trade. Plus fitting which is less than an hour.

I had to get a new heated front screen for my TD6 about 8 months ago, £ 285.00 plus VAT from land rover, there was a cheaper one without the rain sensor........dont know if it's the same one as yours though, a local company fitted it for £60.
