I was thinking of buying a newer Land Rover Defender but they are really expensive.
I have a 1991 Defender which runs well but I know the mileage could be high but not sure,
Years ago I had a garage and would regularly just buy an exchange engine or gearbox.
The thought occurred, with my defender could I buy an Exchange engine, Gearbox, Transfer Box, Turbo, Starter Motor, Alternator, etc, and get a garage to fit it for me.
I already have a spare Gearbox, Transfer Box, Injector Pump, which I can use for sending in exchange.
And if I did all this I would obviously have a new clutch fitted etc,
Has anyone done this and what would it cost.
Please.

There is no particular reason your old engine should be unserviceable if it has been looked after.

But if you want to do so, there is no reason you cannot do the things you suggest.

I would think the price would depend on the actual garage you use.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

As for cost, how long is a piece of string...... it depends on what you have done, by whom and with what.

For instance, someone charging £50/hr taking the same amount of time as someone charging £180/hr will have a significant impact on cost.

I've heard 60k uncared for engine sound worse than a well cared for 250k motor..

Maintenance is key..

Also your current drivetrain components can be rebuilt, no need for exchange items there are Many companies that specialise.

I believe Aztek engineering is @jamesmartin on here and he has rebuilt more engines 'boxes and axles than i've had hot dinners.. ;)
