I have a 2002 (52) TD4 and in the last two months it has had the IRD, VCU and diff replaced... now it looks like I have some worn CV's :(.

I have been looking into replacement CV's or complete driveshafts and am considering purchasing aftermarket parts due to the cost of the genuine ones.

I have read various threads/negative comments about Britpart and will try to avoid them but does anyone have any experience of fitting/using any other aftermarket CV's or driveshafts?

If anyone has fitted any I would be grateful for any advice/feedback.

Thanks.

Hi mark contact bell engineering they may be able to advise you on driveshafts google it ! make sure that all 4 tyres are the same make and size as its the main problem of drivetrain failure on freelanders hope u get it sorted i j

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, the tyres have already been changed. All 4 have been replaced as a set.

I was just wondering if anyone had replaced their cv's/driveshafts with non-genuine parts and what experience they have had. I will contact Bell Engineering and see what they can advise.

Thanks.

Mark.

Driveshafts/cv joints aren't usually the first thing to crop up in the Freelander problems list so it might be worth trying to source a complete secondhand driveshaft from a low mileage breaker.

I got some uj's from Island 4x4 a few years ago, cannot remember what make, but £6 compared to stealers £40, No brainer decision.

Ok... bit of an update. The problem with the car is some grinding noise when reversing on full lock (steering wheel to the right) and vibration at 50 - 70mph. The vibration feels like it is coming from the front, can be felt in the footwell and through the pedals.

Decided to replace the NS driveshaft with an AllMakes 4x4 one as I found some movement in the outer CV. This seems to have fixed the noise on full lock reverse, but the vibration in a straight line has got worse! It is now noticeable when accellerating at 20-30mph as well. It's possible it was like this before, but seems worse after fitting the new NS driveshaft.

I am probably going to replace the OS driveshaft as well but just wondering whether:

1. If both driveshafts were worn and only one is replaced, could this account for the symptoms being worse? I think I have read a thread before where this was the case, but can't find it now.

2. If the new NS driveshaft is faulty/out of balance :(

In addition to the IRD, VCU and rear diff being replaced it has had 4 new tyres and I even swapped out the fronts last night to see if that would make any difference (it didn't).

I have read about other common problems like the lower engine tie, but not sure if this gives similar symptoms.... any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi i have fitted drive shafts and would not go back to freelander spares the one i had on them the sensor ring for the abs and trackion control was 1 and a half mm larger than the old one and was catching on on the sensor and i think has ruined it i emailed them and they said they would get back to me after 3-4 months i do not think they will any way went to a local shop and they got me one and after the same time it still looks good the one from freelander spares rusted and a week on the bench I also replaced the wheel bearings which is always adviseable it save doing the same thing all over again
