Hi all,

Last night, in the snow, rain, wind and dark I decided to replace the donut on my prop shaft!! It seemed like a good idea at the time until it started to get dark!! I was so pleased I managed to complete the job, but..... This morning driving into work it feels the same as the knackered one!!
Is the prop balanced? or does it need to be aligned in a certain way? I sthere a mark somewhere? or should I just turn it a third and try again?
Thanks all

Not really markers.

The prop to drive flange (transfer box end) should be out of synch by about 20 degrees . if you've split the prop on the sliding splines and put it back so they are at 90 degrees this might account for it.

The moral with propshafts is never to take them apart at the splines!

If you feel you really REALLY MUST DO IT, then MARK IT CLEARLY (hammer and chisel job) so you can assemble it just as it was. While it is apart make sure the grease nipples are clear. Assemble using Rocol MT-LM Assembly paste (60% molybdenum disulphide), and it will never wear out.

Make sure you also know which end of the propshaft is the front, and which is the back.

I'm a real noob here!! sorry!! How can I put in a new donut at the rear of the prop without first removing the old one and hence splitting the thing. Am I talking about the right bit? Theres 6 bolts, the kit only gives you three new ones! I undid all the bolts, took them out, Pushed the prop back, pulled the knackered donut out. Forgot to release the handbrake so that I could remove the last bolt!! (The donut was really knackered) found that the landy rolled back a bit!!! rolled out screaming and put blocks under the wheels!
Freely turned the prop!!! happy that I could now put in the new donut and rotate away until the holes lined up!!!
Put everything back together again, cold, wet but happy!!
Vibrated to work this morning!!
So tonight, without taking apart the prop, should i undo all the bolts, take them out, rotate the prop, making sure to have blocks behind the wheels!! and this time aligning the front of the prop so that its out 20 degrees.
Sound easy!!! How do I make sure its only out 20 degrees!!!!???

Right, first off I must apologise, so, sorry ... I just checked in Rave and it's only the front shaft that is 20 deg out of phase, so ignore what I said ... ;)

Now, if the doughnut you took off was shagged then depending upon how long you run it while it was getting shagged might determine how much other damage might have been done. I'd check the front UJ, (of this rear propshaft) that's probably the most likely culprit. Use a lever of some sort and if there's any play in the UJ at all then it's shagged. The prop and flange shouldn't have any movement other than the rotation about the rollers of the UJ ... if you lever it and feel a tap (and especially if you can move and feel it tapping by hand) then that's too much movement and you need to replace the UJ.

So, then (movement or not) I'd take the whole prop off anyway, 'cos the next check is each drive flange .. the output from transfer box and the input to rear diff .. again, there should be no lateral movement, only rotational.

Have a look here .. lr4x4UJreplacement .. or search this forum for help with UJ replacement, I think Buster, maybe Redhand, did a photo walk-through.

If either of the flanges are loose then it gets a bit more involved .. ;)
