Not sure if this has been asked before, but is it possible to replace the VCU with a transfer box?

that way we could select between 2WD and 4WD and wouldn't have the problem of the VCU seizing?

just a thought ...

Haha here we are again, it won't work unfortunately as the freelander is primarily a front wheel drive car. A transfer box would need mounting to a rear wheel drive gearbox

I agree 100% it's the cars down fall on the off road world and a crying shame but they can atleast be made to look the part and perform ok in the dirt

I'm in love with that freelander and similar to that is my ultimate goal

Problem with the VCU is that you can't easily tell when things are wrong. I've ordered myself an ODB2 reader and am hoping to be able to tap into the ABS wheel speed sensors to monitor whether they're running at different speeds. Would have stopped my IRD melt down.
