Repair or buy a galv chassis

Fer ****s sake My brothers a welder if he wants an invisible repair he cuts out the hole then he makes a patch the fits inside the hole. then he seam welds it and grinds the weld flush and fills any small imperfections with a bit of body filler once it's painted theres no way too tell it been welded. but even an over lapped patch isn't gonna knock that much of the asking price. Whereas if you fit a new galvy chassis it might add £2k to the asking price. but it'll have cost you that much to fit it so it won't make any difference to the amount of money you make form the sale.
 
I reckon it's cost me best part of two grand from stripping the tub off last June and deciding on a new chassis, to getting the fecker back on the road a couple of weeks ago.

In the last three years since I bought it It's cost me 4 1/2 grand including the original purchase price, I reckon I'll have spent 5 grand on it by this time next year if I get a decent respray. When I renew the insurance I'll get the value altered to 5 grand. I doubt very much if I'd get that if I came to sell it, an reckon 3 to 4 grand will be a bit more realistic. But that was the whole point of doing it up in the first place I haven't any intention of selling it, ever. It'll be parked in my back yard as a garden feature when I'm smelling of **** an mints.

If you can't see yourself keeping the vehicle then I'd go for patching it up, specially if your a half decent welder or can get welding done on the cheap. An if it's too nackered for that, get shut of it.

As far as getting a galvy chassis is concerned then it all depends on how long you intend using the vehicle. A painted chassis will last 15 to 20 years or more depending on how it's looked after. So if your over 50 then it's pretty much pointless getting a galvanised one cos you won't be driving the ****er by the time it starts falling apart 2nd time round.

Take it to the scrap yard - save yourself the trouble why waste more money.
 
Got to post 40 then got board.
Why have a galv chassis? I have a 33yr old series3 on original chassis (as far as I am aware anyway). Surely a standard one would surfice without the expense of the galv.
 
i'd quite like a galv chassis cos then you can forget about it, it's quite a simple cost/time/benifits calculation that only you on your own can make
 
Thing is with a galvy chassis you worry about going over rocks an stuff for fear of gouging the galvy off at least with a painted one it's just a matter of blathering some more underseal on it.
 
getting a galv chassis supplied and fitted is about £3000 with lots of new bits,its fit and forget, and its piece of mind when towing 3.5ton that your rotton crossmember is not going to rip off ,also adds great value to your land rover

FFS yer dint pay someone to di it fer yer harv the fun is doing it yerself.
 
well if your land rover's chassis is needing replaced your motor is worth very little ,but if you put a galvanised chassis under it you will add great value and desirability and make your motor saleable in the future
