Removing the engine fan?

I'm sure someone here has done this. Given that the engine seems to run so cool, is this recommended for the 2.5 NA? Looks like a simple job - just four bolts. Apart from the obvious heater improvement and weight loss, will it reduce engine noise much?

If the engine runs cool, is the stat OK? You cannot run with no fan IMO, it will overheat when stationary. You could fit an electric fan plenty available from breakers for not a lot and I can give you the part number for an inexpensive thermostat to control it, or you can just use a manual switch.

Having an electric fan as a substitute works well - I have mine set up that way and it has held up even in +90F stop and go traffic.

One thing to check would be that the gauge is reading properly - a thermometer chucked into the top of the radiator after bringing it up to temp (blanket over the grille) might not be a bad idea.

As far as noise goes, frankly i doubt you'll notice the difference with all the shrouding that's on these engines. Put a noise blanket of some sort on the bonnet and that will quiet things down.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not a fan of electric fans - fitted a kenlow set to my V8 some years ago and had endless problems sealing the sensor. I tested the thermostat before fitting it and seemed OK. The engine is running cool - I can feel some warmth in the top rad hose, so I think the gauge is OK. I fitted a new radiator and stat after overheating problems with the old head. I guess I'll leave well alone.

Kenlowe are crap these days. The stat I use clips externally to the top hose so no question of leaks. The best fans are the ones from a breaker that are OEM for a car with a similar size engine.

Keep it standard, simple and nothing much to go wrong.
Definitely need the fan if it ends up under load, ie 2nd gear for 20 mins in hot sunshine going up side of a mountain track! was glad mine had one

Sadly, 20 minutes of hot sunshine is something I can only dream of - I live in Ireland lol.
