Removing Gearbox

Hi all

I have to replace my rear crank seal on my 96 Disco V8i Manual.
Can I disconnect the gear lever from underneath the Disco when removing the box without removing the trim inside ?
How is the 5 speed gear lever attached to the gear box ?
Any other hints and tricks I should know about to remove the gear box ?

If you are going to remove the gear box then you need to get a Haynes manual or Rave disc, there is a lot more to worry about than how the gear lever connects to the box
 
Simple job to take the centre console out. Then you'll have a big hole through which you can support the gearbox while you undo everything. The gearbox and transfer box will come out all in one piece so all you have to disconnect is the speedo and handbrake cables and the wiring. If you've got access to an engine crane it'll be a lot easier but you can suport the box with a chain or similar through the hole then lower it away on a jack. Cursing and swearing will occur but it ain't that difficult.
 
I do have a Haynes manual, but they do not state exactly how the gear lever connects to the box and I see no one here has told me either. Is there a bolt, cap screw or does it even screw on ?????????? Who knows. I have removed my transfer box before a few times and the gearbox is only a few extra bolts on the bell housing. The xfer box comes out from underneath without removing the trim, just remove a pin from the lever. I am hoping to do the same with the gear box. "I hate oil leaks"

I park in a garage with a polished floor every day at work and you know how it looks with an oil leak.

It's held on by a plate bolted onto the top of the box.Perso I use ratchet straps round G-box & transfer box and the chassis rails, takes bloody ages to ratchet it down and back up again but rarther that than a squashed head!

You must be bored if you want to do it just to change the rear crank seal, they all leak and unless your clutch is slipping or you are loseing litres don't see the point.

gear lever is attached to the box with a 13mm bolt that is under the internal gear stick gaitor. you can get the screws out of the rubber gearstick and t/box stick surround without removing the console but for the sake of a few extra fasteners i'd take the console out. at the land rover main agent i worked at,we always left the console in. now i work for myself and i have to pay for any breakages, i take the console out. so in short, yes the box can come out without any major interior dismantling, BUT take it from me,its easier to take the console out and have plenty of access!!!
 
the internal gaitor is clipped to the centre console and surrounds the gearstick, unclip it and you will find a 13mm bolt holding the main gearstick to a stub coming out of the gearbox. there are then 3 screws holding the rubber floor gaitor down to the top of the gearbox, these also need removing, the floor gaitor should then be free to pry over the top of the gearstick "stub" when the main box is lowered down.
