Removing 200tdi power steering pump

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to remove the power steering pump completely and either put the alternator in its place or move the alternator completely?
I have a 90 with no power steering and it's not something I'm bothered about fitting. It does have a disco 200tdi engine in and the pump is just plumbed up in a circuit.
I've googled it but can't seem to find much. Any ideas

Why is it plumed in a circuit? It is powered by a separate belt that need not be there even if pump is still on engine.[ suppose someone may have thought of fitting power steering later ] I would not move the alternator down in that position. More info wanted.

How would I run an alternator then if I removed the power steering pump as the belt for that runs from the pump.
I had the engine put in and the thought was there to maybe fit power steering at a later date however as I've said I don't miss it and have no real need for it.

Would fitting a second alternator kit to it allow me to place the alternator there and get rid of power steering pump and mounting the alternator on that side?
 
Second alternator kit on a 200tdi disco sits where the air con was.

Power steering & alternator are 2 different belts BUT yes the PAS runs the alternator.

If you remove the PAS you will have to move the alt forward(towards the rad) on it mounts & get a longer belt.
 
alternator sits where the air con pump should yes with second alternator kit, however if I was to move the alternator there would a normal fan belt then run fine on the water pump crank and alternator(mounted where the air con should be) with the standard belt.
Ideally I'm after running a standard belt to do it if I can
 
Does the belt for that one run off the crank? I'm guessing the crank pulley is a double? Which belt fits between the crank and the water pump and what tensions that?

@dieseldog69 hope all Is well..would you have a picture of how this pulley etc is on your motor?
Is there an idler wheel on the top belt?

there is different pulleys for different setups, i had a 90 with no PAS, it had just a single belt to the alternator, albeit shorter than the combined PAS/Alt version on a disco.
You can probably change the bottom pulleys so it lines up, then you can use off the shelf land rover parts?

I must be missing something here. My fan belt is tensioned from the power steering pump, which has a double pulley on which has the alternator belt on. If I simply remove the power steering pump then what goes in place to tension the fan belt or do I just get the alternator to sit in line and get a longer belt?

As for why I don't want PAS I've owned the Landrover for 6 years nearly now and never missed PAS. I've just put it back into narrower tyres on standard rims and thought the steering was too light then. Personal choice really, I've no plans to sell it at all so no need to think about resale value.

iam sure my non-pas landrover drove the alternator and the fan from one belt, tensioned by the alternator. will see if i can dig out some photos
 
I made my own alt mounting years ago for the disco tdi I stuck in the series, its a bit heath robinson, but its been fine, once when off roading a branch got up in the pulleys and spat the belt off.
The main issue is the crank pulley runs a 1/2 inch /13mmwide belt and the A127 alt runs a 3/8 inch/10mm wide belt, Iirc the belt I have on it is 11.5mm wide, you can see the odd wear pattern in the pic of the adjuster.

I felt the same about power steering for my 1985 90" - until I fitted it as part of a 200tdi conversion. It makes general driving/parking effortless. I don't think the missus would still be driving it without.

I had a 2010 90 for a while. Made it a bit nippier around town but that's about it. The mrs does miss it but she hardly drives it anyway.
Cheers for the photos lynall. Is the bracket completely home made aswell? I've heard something about a series 3 alternator bracket can be used or something?
