Trying to get my gearbox back in as had to access the clutch. have managed to locate the splines of the gearbox into the engine but the gearbox needs to rotate a small amount and cant pust it in by meself. currently hava trolly jack supporting the rear and an engine crane supportin the front. anyone got any suggestions on how to get it in? or any tips on making it easier. who would own a landrover eh?!?

get someone to help you, have you got any way of attaching a rope to the manifold or something like that to twist engine relative to gearbox, i'm guessing you've removed boyh engine mounts completely to give you room

yeah his got the engine held by a crane he says if i'm not mistaken

No, he is trying to replace the gearbox which is held in an engine crane.

@08mckerp. Start over. I know it's a pain; but drop the box back down onto some blocks and reposition your straps. It is possible to pick the complete box up in an engine crane. With the straps in the right place the box will balance. It is near impossible to do it on your own with the box resting partly on a trolley jack.

I have a strap around the narrow front part of the box just behind the bell housing and another just in front of the mounts pretty much where the main box joins the transfer box. You have then swing the box into place. Having a few nuts handy to spin onto the studs can help too.

Anyway, this will leave the trolley jack available for 'tweaks' or you can use a ratchet strap into the crane arm.

I normaly put the engine on a bottle jack at the back, then use the crain through the door holding the gear box up. Its abit hit and miss lining up the gearbox, had them go in first hit, and had to spend hours messing about other times. Very satisfying when it finaly goes "clunk" and u can just bolt it all back together. If its not going in, dont try and tighten it in with the bolts, youll just ruin somthing.

currently hava trolly jack supporting the rear and an engine crane supportin the front.

Do you mean both on the gearbox? You should be able to support the gearbox centraly with just the crain, if you make some sort of cradle with rope. Much easier to move it around like this. With a bottle jack on the back of the engine you can easily line up the verticle tilt too.

Rich.
