hi, i recently had my gearbox reconed and i have a problem. i recently had to make an emegency stop in 5th gear. when i tried to change down gear it was stuck, the only way to get it out of gear was to drive forward in 5th and knock it outta gear. i have since tried it a couple of times to see if it was a one off, but it does it every time! i do not know if this is a gearbox problem or clutch, but the garage say that i should not be stopping in 5th gear and apparently the gearbox repair guy said the same. but i don't see that stopping in 5th should be a problem if there is nothing wrong with the geaebox. has anyone else had this problem or know what could be causing this!?
cheers

So ask them why when doing an Advanced Driving test they routinely make peep's do an emergency stop in 4th or 5th gear at speeds between 50mph & 60 mph.

I had a recon box fitted to mine and had a problem with 4th gear from the off, got loads of bull from the garage about it being our driving:mad: but after my perseverance (constant phone call's and visit's to garage) at insisting they sort it under the warranty or supply and fit a new one they eventually backed down. They simply did not want the Disco back in garage as it was taking room up from a "paying" customer's motor. Keep hassling them to repair or replace, and if need be go to the CAB for some advice.

but you'll be taking it out of gear just before the vehicle stops, they don't expect you to brake to a stall

So what are you supposed to do in a motorway in an emergency situation? Change down to 3rd and over-rev the engine before you brake?

Write a letter, these things are always best done in writing - gives you a paper trail should it get messy. :)

why would you want to do that, unless while braking you spotted an escape route and selecting third was the most suitable gear to enable you to proceed

what's wrong with doing what normal people do and brake in whatever gear they are currently in and select neutral, or any other gear just before they stop ?

True, but if panic set's in people don't always do what's right in an emergency stop situation even under "safer" test conditions, having said that if doing an advanced test it'd be expected of you.

another thing i should mention is that the clutch was not changed as the guys at the garage said it was fine. could this problem be caused by the clutch? also, every one does it from time to time, slip it into 5th instead of 3rd and chudder along like a ****. i can't do this as 5th gear will not except it, just throws the gearstick back out, i have never had this before!

sounds like selector damage or syncro damage, can you get 5th with engine off

it will go into 5th gear going up through the gears/ revs etc and yes it will go into gear with the engine off, just not if the engine aint ready for it...... 5th instead of 3rd.

sounds like syncro related issue, I've an lt85 I rebuilt, but if like mine the 5 gear is in a separate housing it would be possible to drop transfer box and pull gearbox back casing. what model and year is your land rover and we can see if it has lt77 or r380

i have just taken the landy out again and i can get it in 5th from second now, but it still klonks!! still sticking in 5th if i stop in 5th though. i was also told that it might need to bed in a bit, but it has already done over 2,000 miles which i rekon is plenty.
