i am just about to embark on a full rebuild of a 2002 defender for off road purposes and was wondering what engine & gearbox to plunge for.i want something with plenty of grunt and wondered whether a 4.6 from a rangie p38 would fit?
any advice would be helpful

you may fair better with a 3.9 with distributor, unless you wish to swap the timing chest to fit a distributor on the 4.6 or run mega squirt and bin gems ecu. unless you have anniversary v8 defender ecu and alarm and key set or have it modified=will not run without bcem

how about axles would i need to use the p38 ones or defender ones

Disco 2 and p38 axles are no good-width. Have you considered a disco series 1 v8 as a donor car as I believe the axle fits and will give disc brakes

If you use P38 you will need a P38 transfer box to get the prop shafts on the same side as the diffs.

What are you expecting to achieve that can't be done with a standard 2002 Defender on decent tyres?
