Rear window issues

I'm looking for some help / advice / tips with a problem I have with my new Freelander 3 door hardtop. '03, which I picked up yesterday

Everything is looking good with the car, however, there is one fault. The rear tailgate window will not close.

Everything looks as if it is working ok (switching, electrical, etc) and the glass will raise and lower as it should, however when raising the glass, it gets to the top and there is an audible warning sound (three bings) and then the glass lowers and stays down. The only way around this fault is to take the fuse out when the window has closed fully - timing is everything !!

I've tried recalibrating the rear window, with no success and I've checked the hardtop is secure and there is no movement. I've also had the door panel off and can not see anything that might be causing a problem.

My thoughts are that;
1. The glass is set too high and needs to be lowered ?
2. there is some sort of 'pinch' sensor on the window
3. there's a faulty sensor on the hardtop making the car think the roof is not locked down

Any help would be really great !

Worth popping the question on the Freelander section. When you bought was the window already like this not up properly. as for recalibration what action did you take. if the window came like this did the seller leave any service history such as regulators replaced Tailgate. Is the door light on the dash display still showing door still open. this might mean the tailgate is still a jar. This will leave the window down a little by and inch. To reset is to remove the battery lead say a for 30 seconds this will drop the window when reconnecting. Ignition key ii for dash light display then press switch for the window back up. Or you can use the ignition key in the tailgate lock to raise again. to lower with the fobkey keep the finger on open next to the tailgate until it drop fully. possible the door a jar issue needed a little shunt to shut.

Not being a gay hairdresser driver I find this evoquist language akin to naval fluff plucking. I shall clip clop off now hold onto my virtual carpet rug as I peruse my fingernails tutting.

The three bing noise signifies that the window is not calibrated. As you have tried this it could be the hard top switch, on the rear pillar, or (more likely) could be that the ccu cannot tell where the window is and is returning a no calibration signal.

There is a hall effect sensor in the window motor that tells the ccu where the window is. This could have failed. Swapping motor is simplest fix although I covered changing the sensor in another thread some while back. Quite fiddly and involves soldering.
That's where I'd start, roof switch check first, use a multimeter, then motor.

My lovely wife did, although to be fair, a Freelander wasn't invented when we got married.

One thing that looks odd to me is that when the window is down, it still looks fairly high in the door frame (if that makes sense) - it sits about 5" above the door itself, and seems to be pretty wobbly as well.

You don't need to post everything in bold, either. We can read normal typescript.

Try operating the switch with the door open

This new evidence is critical. Original post said it went up and down as it should.

Find out what is stopping it going down, check in door for obstructions and cables twisted etc.

This should sort it.

Hi, wobbly the glass is but the glass should disappear completely, as andyfreelandy (got it right Andy) says remove the tailgate door card & check for obstuctions.
