Rear wheel drive

I have a bit of a knock from the rear diff so i thought i will drop the prop to the rear and see if it stops knocking. Mondeo mode as its known well mine has no drive at the front and is rear wheel drive only . I refitted the prop and drove up a grassy knoll and rear wheels spin and sod all at the front , tell me what is knacked.

This doesnt sound right, Mondo mode, is the prop shaft off and front wheel drive only. No drive to the rear if the prop is off.

Jack up all four wheels and rotate the front ones by hand, the rest should turn.

The flange on the IRD to prop shaft is driven by the other main shafts, If your IRD was stripped then you would have no drive to the rear either.

Knock from rear diff sounds like the front diff mounting bush is fooked, could be the others but is usually the front one.

As for no drive at the front, as Northern Irelander ses if no drive at the front there should be no drive at the back as drive is transmitted from the IRD to the rear via the prop shafts. Even if IRD is 'tatered then front wheel drive should still be OK.

Unless a front drive shaft has bust/been removed.

was the traction control light flashing ? me thinks if the fronts were spinning, the traction control would brake the fronts only sending all the drive to the rear ?

The traction control light was flashing away when i had on the grass but only the rear wheels were spinning .When i removed the prop i dropped it in gear but no drive and no noise from the box at all ,it just sat there prop back on and away it goes. The diff seams to move about a bit but the Freelander drives spot on.

Jack up the front and try to turn each wheel. They will be very difficult to move if drive is being transmitted as it should. If a drive shaft is broken at the front then the wheel on the offending side should turn freely as the effect of turning the wheel is not being transferred through the drivetrain.
Also look at the opposing wheel as you try and turn the other. It should try and rotate in the opposite direction if drive is being transmitted.

Oh yeah,
If the diff is moving about sounds like a bush is worn. It will still drive OK but on changing gear you may hear a clunking noise. Get a pry bar onto each bush and try to move them about, if one is u/s then it will be obvious as there will be a lot more play in it than in the others.

Its a gearbox problem, a part breaks inside which means you only get rear wheel drive. Its actually quite common, i've repaired a few like this. I saw one last week that only had front wheel drive because of a similiar problem in the gearbox (apart from it was a different part that broke)

Do you mean the diff?

A gearbox issue would affect both fwd and rwd, either he's got drive or he hasnt. Exactly what part do you mean Austen?


Here Beechy have you jacked those wheels up yet?

Sorry, but I don't want to go into fine detail as its our business repairing these, but i can guarantee its the gearbox, the gearbox sends drive to the rear and front wheels (into the IRD) seperatly and it is possible (and quite common - if you see a lot of freelanders) to only get drive to front or rear if certain parts break. Its a gearbox out and rebuild job or buy a recon box. If driven a for long perioids like this its can smash the rear diff to pieces as well as they are not designed to take all the power

No point taking the 'dont tell all' approach, cos someone will come on here with the competent mechanics how to version, piccies and all.

Sorry taken a long time to reply but computer went tits up, it looks like some thing in my gear box is U/S so i will drive it till it falls apart. It looks like i may have to fix the disco and then park the Freelander up while i fix it .

I wouldn't drive it, it will rip the rear diff mounts out and eat the rear diff. If you strip the box down you will see that the splines that engage with the IRD have stripped.
