Afternoon all,

I was wondering if soneone could answer one of the couple issues ive had lately.
I was on my way home from work yesterday when my back wheel locked up, i tried driving forward and it released again. So when i got home i jacked it up and checked for play an there was only a millimeter or two, so i suspected brakes as i knew they were due a change, i put in new ones i had at the house. There is a louder whinning sort of noise when driving now and at two points on main roads while on the way to work i could feel it starting to slow me down an pull to the left both harshly.

My question is, could it still be a bearing issue as i did not push the brakes when this happened?

Thanks, will

Imo it is certainly a bearing issue, even if there is no play it is likely the inner bearing collapsing and getting bound up, it's probably going to need a new stub axle too now, but they aren't hard to change and not too pricey. Get it done asap.

+1 Discopol. Get a manual of some type, Haynes poss., and crack on with it. If one has gone, it's probably worth checking all four, before another one goes ping. Or 'HORRIBLE GRATING NOISE'

Thanks for the info :) . It was grinding from the minute i left work, so its now parked up and i will start stripping to find the problem soon hopefully, weather dependent. How many bearings an seals are in the rear?, there's some with only 1 seal and some with 2 etc.

Try here :

Land Rover Discovery 1 Rear Axle parts from JA032851 | Paddock

give them your VIN number and ask for Timkin bearings ... get a bearing kit, do both rears and don't leave it too long before you do the fronts either ...

make sure you load the new bearings with bearing grease when you fit them ...

Each wheel has 2 bearings and one inner hub oil seal, some kits come with a outer hub gasket too but that's only a paper jobbie gasket use silicon instead it's easier
