ANOTHER LESSON LEARNED TODAY!!!
Went to open the Frozen rear Tailgate door on my 2003 Freelander, poured Hot Water over the window and Lock and after a few seconds pulled up the opening handle and tugged the door handle which came away in my hand thankfully not damaging the cable etc. So now I need to replace it and hopefully this is where you my fellow Freelander owners come in. How do I do it???
Any advice gratefully received.

So the simple bit is the changing of the handle. Four screws along base of inner tailgate panel then prise it off.
3 nuts hold handle on and a couple of electrical plugs. One for number plate light and one for door release switch.

The hard bit is that the studs will have rusted off and will need holding to unscrew nuts or cutting off.

The handle replacement looks around £100 as a used one will be as rusty !

Not a difficult job but locate a replacement handle with 3 good studs on it and no rust before you start.

Stay warm !!

Thanks for the info Andy. Bought one late yesterday on ebay for £90.00 delivered but God knows what it"ll be like. After reading the threads on this site I never realised how common this fault is. Keeping my fingers crossed it will be ok.
What with the dodgy Autobox and now this and after owning 5 previous Freelanders and 1 Defender which leaked from the roof like a colander it makes me wonder if I should maybe consider my association with the Green Oval, But what the heck would I buy? As a pensioner and without a huge pot of cash my options are limited!!! I would still want a 4x4 but if its at all possible maybe a more reliable one at an affordable price. Inbetween my 4th Freelander and this one I ran for 18 months a 3 door Toyota Rav and yes it did have restricted space but boy was it reliable, so thats a maybe!
All the best
