Hi guys,

Been getting a knock when taking off in first and second from my transmission somewhere. Located a sized UJ on the front prop transfer box end, replaced it with a new GKN UJ and went for another spin today.
I still have the knock and its coming from the back somewhere.

So, took rear prop off to check both UJ's, they seem ok and neither are loose so I slid the prop apart (after marking it) and noticed the grease nipple was blocked and on inspection all of the plastic coating on the teeth of the prop is coming away. could this possibly be the culprit of the knocking noise?

If so can i strip plastic coating from teeth and pack with grease, re-fit or do I need it re-coating......if it knocks after this then im looking at transmission slack in the rear diff I guess?

many thanks

Although it doesn't look in great shape, personally i wouldn't expect it to create a knock given it's condition, the teeth are still quite solid ( apart from flaking plastic coating ) but more to the point are you able to move it by yourself or even gently vice it and give it a twist?

Replaced my ball joint last month during the restoration...ordered a hardy spicer prop and rear drive flanges to try and knock it on the head. I'm thinking 1mm in prop, 1mm possibly on each drive shaft plus diff play all add up to a lot of backlash..

Either that or me ball joint is already knackered after only 20miles on it..crumbs!!

AFAIK they last for donks. If youve been restoring are you sure everything is tightened fully. The trans needs some backlash so as not to sieze up!

Transmission system was only thing I left alone, the previous owner couldn't comprehend maintenance so think everythings been left to it's own devices fir a while. I'll keep you posted once new prop goes in!
