i have only had the car two months -2006 3dr TD4. 69000 miles, but recently noticed a new noise when first driving the car in the morning.
For the first few minutes there seems to be some loud knocks and clunks coming from the rear offside area. it seems to be when going over bumps.

the really weird thing is that after a couple of minutes it tends to stop, then only occasionally will you hear a knock, and not always when going over bump.

i have had the front rear diff mount changed...made no difference...and it didnt cure the knock i heard when braking at very slow speeds either!

I cant see anything obvious, and the exhaust seems to be solid.

any idea what might be the problem?

Would like to make some suggestions, but struggling to think of to much that's gona help - or indeed be comical!

Would the sounds be audible on a video you could post - someone might just recognise it.

not sure i have a way to record video whilst im driving!

Im gonna check the top of the rear suspension strut and see if theres anything obvious there...

another thought i had was whether it could be an internal fault on the strut...its almost as if the fluid has sunk down low overnight and clatters about for a minute or so until it has moved the fluid back around the inner valves? Im probably hypothesising complete nonsense, but its the only thing i can think of that might explain the knocking stopping after a few minutes.

I went skiing with some mates a few weeks ago. We went up in a Mitsi Outlander and I sat in the back. Heard a couple of clunks from the back axle en-route but going up the access road (gravel stoney track winding its way up the mountain) it was clunking and banging something awful. He must have heard it from the front, but he just carried on completely ignoring it. I didn't like to say anything in case he got all shirty about his posh new motor and what would I know driving mankey old Land Rovers - he can be a bit touchy!

shock absorbers on any vehicle can give anything from a loud bang to a quiet rattle, I had one in a transit that only started making a noise when I went over a pot hole and after a few miles it stopped again, It's hard putting your finger on a suspension knocking noise especially as it's intermittent. I have diagnosed knocking noises before by jacking the vehicle up and hitting the tyre with a big lump hammer in all directions to simulate a pot hole. There is a check that MOT testers do and that is to push the vehicle down on a corner to compress the spring and see if you only get one recoil when you let go although I think this is difficult to do with anything bigger than a car lol.
Check everything is tickety boo first before replacing it.

I've also seen a video where a guy who works for a shock manufacturer says that test is only valid for one of the internal valves in the shocks...if any of the smaller valves have the problem, that test won't show anything.

I have a feeling the ambient temperature is also having an effect...i have noticed the problem is more pronounced the colder the morning is. Today was quite mild, and i heard only one clunk....the last few days have been much colder and the noise was much more obvious.
