The rear door cannot be released/opened from the outside even when unlocked with the remote. the only way to open is with the boot release button on the key fob or the two buttons in the dash held down for three seconds. Normally if the car is unlocked the boot door should open with the release.
    Any suggestions please.

It sounds like the taildoor handle exterior switch has failed.

They are availble seperately from the handle and i think pretty cheap.

Pull the rubber surround off the switch and im guessing its full of white crud (technical term), as they tend to seize up.

If you want to remove the exterior handle just remove the 2x phillips head screws and then pull the panel off. Then its like 5x 10mm nuts holding the exterior handle on.
