I have never been able to undo my rear door on my 300 Tdi without putting the key in the lock, then the other day that failed as well

So i bought a repair spring from Ebay for about a fiver. Climbed in the back of the car today and stripped the door panel etc off. Poked about a bit and managed to open the door from the outside with the key.

Nothing obvious could be seen to be wrong in the way of loose rods etc so it had to be the spring (click on the pics to view full size)

So I removed the lock mechanism, it took a bit of twisting and turning to get it out. I carefully examined it as best I could and I could see the spring was not broken.

So I cleaned it all and greased it all up, refitted it and swore my head off as it still did not work. This had taken me well over 2 hours. So I stripped it back out and examined it again, this time I spotted another spring and that was broken

It was a bugger to get out and refit the new one, this pic show how it fits as its between 2 plates and the locating holes are hard to spot.

The awkward bit when refitting the rods is getting a spring clip back on one of them.

I used a screwdriver that was magnetic to locate the clip

Its then a case of twisting it round with your fingers into place, it took me about 20 attempts so patience is needed. Don’t forget the child lock rod as you cant see it, I managed to twist it into place afterwards.

It was a very good feeling to see the cenral locking operate and be able to open the door from outside :D

Pity it took me 2 attempts and about 4 hours of fiddling, hopefully this will help others do it the easy way first time.

done mine a few weeks back and that was a right pain to do, must have took about 20 goes to get the spring in the holes:(. but it is good when the door works as it should:D

I know it's being lazy, but have you got a link to the ebay seller for the spring please? I've been looking at them for ages but get confused as to which one I need to get. (its my age apparently)

Thanks for this I have a Disco to look at on Monday with exactly the same problem.
Well I got the disco rear door fixed today, the problem with the one I had in my garage today was not the same as the OP. The problem turned out to be the actual handle on the outside of the door, it was rusted and seized solid, as a consequence the internal release wouldn't work either. Liberal quantities of WD40 a wire brush and some patience eventually freed it all up, I had to retention the spring and apply some grease before reassembling the door. Unfortunately for me I had stripped the whole door lock mechanism before I found the problem, it wouldn't have taken me 4 hours to do the job if I had found the problem early on

thank you so much for posting the photos, with the help of these I summoned up the courage and know don't have to climb over the back seats to put the shopping in the boot.
Cheers
Steve

Hi
I have the same problem, thanks for the pictures. New springs arrived today. Now I get to fiddle with the small spring.

Fixed mine with an elastic band the postman dropped on my path , put it round the bar that sticks out on the left , holds the button up nicely :)

Central locking works but ,if the band is too strong you need to lock it with the key manually .
