I’ve ordered new pins, but I’m just wondering why they are designed like this with the spring and ball !! Any ideas ?

It is to keep them firm and stop rattle. Nut is done up until tight then back a couple of turns so spring is able to a move a tad and then lock the tab. It is worth changing the pins now and then but in the end the cups for the balls wear and new hinges are needed.

And that answers my next question. Which was going to be how tight do you make them. 😁 I did think the spring needed some room to move right enough. It’s quite a design when you get into it, with the keyway cut into the pin for the lock washer etc. I wish Land Rover had put as much thought into keeping the water out 🤨

Iirc there was a recall from LR called something like water ingress repair manual on how to repair all the leaks, them same owners now have evoques!
