I think the rear diff is on its last legs. Its making some weird noises. What sort of costs am I looking at to get it replaced? Is there a good source for 2nd hand ones or best go for reconditioned?

A lot of them about defender diffs will fit as will Range Rover classic. You have 2 variants 10 spline and 24 spline. If you're replacing it and got the cash to do so go 24 spline for the added strength. You will need different half shafts and drive flanges.

I've bought a reconditioned diff off eBay for £15 and then a normal diff for £35. Both 10 spline as it was for a series with a Tdi conversion. Breakers will want about £50 but a general eBay seller may start the auction at 99p.

It's easy to do yourself but the diff weighs about 35kg so is a little difficult in that sense but not overly involved takes me about 30 mins to change one after I've waited for the oil to drain. No idea what a garage will charge.
If you are local to Devon I can give you hand or walk you through it on here. But if you can hold two spanners you can change a diff.

Thanks. Bit far from Devon, I'm in South Cumbria. I'll need to get the garage to do it. I'm struggling with car repairs at the moment. I've been diagnosed with costochondritis after a car crash 2 years ago. It took me 6 weeks and several boxes of pain killers to replace the bearings in the front prop shaft.

I'll need to do some more investigating, not 100% sure its the diff. There was a screech like a slipping fan belt and smell of burning rubber last night. Still sounds to be from the rear end. After the screech there was a clunk and it stopped. Today when I tried to find the noise it wouldn't do it. The diff does need replacing at some point, as does the power steering pump, both have some play.
