Just a quick question, my beautiful new rear crossmember arrived today and I noticed that on the underside there are three threaded collars, evenly spaced, welded to it. It's the same on the original rusty, knackered one but I had'nt noticed 'em before.
So..... what are they for, what's their purpose?

they are for the rail that fits to the tow hitch ( ie; dixon-bate adjustable type )

It's a throwback to the days when Land-Rovers were expected to pull agricultural equipment instead of tractors.
