hi all, just replacing rear cross member on a full rebuild series 3 1974 swb, i've cut off the old cross member and was hoping the new one fitted on like a glove but it doesn't......have i done something wrong? all help would be great many thanks

yes measured 1.25m size of tub plus a couple mm for spacers, the problem is the new cross member doesn't seem to line up or as i presume slide on too the chassis,i have chocked chassis with wood to keep width

looking at the new cross member i would have thought the extensions would fit over the old chassis or iam i wrong,do i need to be chopping the chassis up to fit. Do i need to cut the chassis to the shape of the new cross member extensions ?

i cut the old cross member off then cut off the remaining pieces from the ends of the chassis, as i was hoping the chassis would fit into the extensions of the new cross member, i'am i wrong in thinking this, should i cut the chassis to the shape of the extensions

even with cutting the extensions to open them up it will not sit properly, one side seems ok with a bit of banging but the other side seems to ride high like the extensions are out, could i cut the extension back to minimum

The quality of aftermarket parts is variable.
If you still have the rear tub fitted, then all you've to do is make sure the crossmember and the tub fit.

I've stopped buying crossmembers with extensions as it's easier to get a good fit by making my own fitting plates. I had to adjust the last one with extensions by driving wooden beams into the extensions, and forcing them into shape.

the cross member was bearmach but i think it may be out slightly, but i will try cutting the extensions down to get a better fit, no i have removed the tub put i have measured from front tub brackets 1.25m plus 5-8mm for spacers to inside of cross member

How my cross member with extensions went on (110). Took a bit of trimming when in place and welded along the corner folds too.
