Rear Axle

hi i have a disco 300tdi rear axle which needs changing. i have been given a very good range rover rear axle, if i take the diff out of the range rover axle would i be able to put my disco 300tdi rear diff in it.

I believe the axles on the RRC and the Disco are the same, the difference being the diff is a higher geared in the RRC so by rights yes the diffs should just be a straight swap.

If its a P38 RR axle it won't swap.

I may be wrong so don't quote me - standing by to be corrected.

Pretty sure RRC and disco axles are interchangeable. Diffs too. Disco, RRC, 90, 110 etc have the same 3.54:1 diff ratio, it's the transfer box gearing that differs.

10 or 24 shaft axle?

24 spline on the RR etc., early stuff was 10-spline before 1994-ish.

Change-over dates are always 'flexible', you may be in luck with a 24-spline, just depends on when the axle was built. Ours (1999) has the date codes etched on the casings, might be worth having a look.

I don't know what else is changeable that might help your proposed swap, maybe one of the other guys can help there.

is there not a difference in shock mounts in the rrc axle sure i rember some thing when i was swoping axles on my 90

I've got an August 94 registered Disco 300TDi, where would I check to see whether I had a 10 or 24 spline diff?

Remove the drive flange bolts and count the number of splines on the half-shaft.
