I am moving over next year and have been looking into this. If you
have owned the vehicle for more than 6 months before you move, you
will not have to pay Vehicle Registration Tax. If it is a hardtop with
no windows, you can register it as a commercial and pay €165 Road tax
I think. If it has windows and seats in back it will be nearer €900 as
a car (road tax is on engine size). Insurance is expensive and there
are not many companies dealing with the unusual. Check out the CLRI
forum where there are a couple of queries on this.

It will take some time for me to get used to drive on the left-side of
the road but I really can't be away from my SIII for a long time, so I
need to check those things asap.

Which side you drive on is a bit arbitary in the countyside as the
roads can be very narrow, some of the locals drive like lunatics
because there is rarely anything coming the other way! The EU funded
roads are good though and most drivers stick to the speed limits as
they are paranoid about the new points system on the licenses.

Ireland seems to have a fairly healthy if small Land Rover club scene
divided between the two clubs. Be prepared to have your Land Rover
referred to as jeep though, it is too commonly used to bother arguing
about!

If you are commited to a long stay, you could always convert it to
RHD.

Commercial road tax is €253 (just renewed my 130)

regarding vehicle inspection (MOT), how does it work? over here, in
Portugal, I have to take it every year to be inspected (in January,
because the registration date was Jan/1980)

If it registered as commercial it will need an annual test at a
commercial test centre. If private, there is a two-yearly NCT (national
car test).
