re programing the remote fob

Well guys my 'here's a thing trying to get my remote fob reprogramed found a indi garage they want £60 to do the job i think a bit over the top but never mind. BUT the best part is the land rover / jag dealer in wolves basically said my 2003 hippo is to old they do not have the soft ware anymore for vehicles this old how BAD is that so i said if i buy a brand new top of the range range rover today in 10 or more years they will not be able to repair / diagnose it they could not answer !!!! .
Has anyone on here ever fitted an after market remote locking kit.

It's possibly just the dealer you went to.
The pre 2006 FL1, Discovery 1/2 and Defender all used Rover T4 as a diagnostic suite. It's based on an old Rover protocol, which is well out of date now.
Later LRs use JLR SDD, which isn't compatible with the early vehicles. This is based on a more modern Ford protocol, so isn't compatible with the early systems.

Each of these systems uses a different ruggedized computer, which costs silly money to replace should it fail.
It's possible that the T4 computer system had failed, which means programming on the FL1,D1/2 isn't possible unless the T4 computer is replaced or repaired, which they're unlikely to have done if demand for its use is limited.

The remote doesn't just lock the car, it also activates the alarm system too.

Apparently Timpsons, the shoe and key cutting outfit can replace car keys now, already programmed. I dont know the cost but its almost certainly gonna be cheaper than a main dealer.

I dot know. My daughter woz on about it cos she needs a new key and fob for her kia. She has two keys and fobs but one of the fobs dont work and the chip in one key needs.reprogramming. Kia wants about £300

£300 bux for a Kia, that's not a bad price.... Oh, wait, that's just for a key??

I am led to believe the key has the chip as i do not carry my remote fob with me as it is useless so it can be 100 miles away from my hippo and everything locks and unlocks and starts with the key matter were i am as my remote is sitting at home.
This is why i am looking to fit an after market central locking kit with remotes to work the drivers door locking lever that fits on to the key lock mechanism in the door

The key contains the immobiliser transponder, which turns off the immobiliser.
However locking with the remote activates deadlocks, which prevent the doors from opening from the inside, which is an insurance requirement.
The deadlocks can still be activated by locking with the key, but you have to turn the key to the locked position twice for them to work.

Won't that need a fob, the same as is correctly at home?

Aftermarket locking kits won't deadlock the vehicle, or activate the intruder alarm, both of which the vehicle insurance will assume to be working for them to cover against theft.

Surely simply getting the factory fobs programmed and working would be far less work, and allow the vehicle to be protected the way the insurance company will want.

Why does it need programming, did it fail or is it a replacement ??

Damn it man, I'm at the exact opposite corner of the country from you, and the fuel bill to drive down to get a key programmed would be more than the hippo is worth....

Only fobs not keys. I spent a fair bit of cash trying to do keys but was beaten !!

Hi i do agree about the dead locks not working without the remote but do not agree with the case that if the doors can not be opened from the inside is a bit stupid not good if you need to get out in a hurry like if its on fire or sinking lol i will not travel with doors locked child locks on the rear YES but having been a recovery driver for the police i have seen a few incidents were people have not been able to unlock the car and have had to have the roof removed .even in a cabriolet
And i am sure there would be some repocusion's if the ocupence of a car died because they could not get out of it
But my problem is not that bad a problem i can live with putting the key in the door but if i do fit a after market C/L it will be fitted to the key side of the lock or the push button thus replacing the key use

Deadlocks on any vehicle can only be activated from outside the vehicle, making it impossible for someone in the vehicle to be trapped by the locks in a crash, as the vehicle won't be moving.
Secondly the Freelander has a lock release impact sensor, which pops the door locks in an impact.

I still can't work out why you're wanting to go to all the trouble of fitting some low performance aftermarket piece of tat, when a remote control Thatcham category 1 security system was supplied with the vehicle as standard.

Yes i know and i am a retired hgv driver mechanic and with time on my hands and money is tight . So a project is what i do at the moment i am doing the front top mounts when i can get the parts here .
I am not replacing the thatcham alarm or to disable it just adding to it so to speak the kit i might be fitting is only to make unlocking the car easier just basically replaceing the use of the key.
But the car stood for nearly 2 years before i had it and was never locked to which added to all its problems i have had to put right

By not using the factory remote, you are removing the Thatcham CAT 1 capability, as the vehicle doesn't deadlock the doors on the key, or activate the interior movement detection.
The key lock function on the FL1 is designed for emergency use only (should the fob battery fail), and if you need to lock the vehicle from the outside, so a dog can be left inside in the vehicle for a couple of minutes, say when popping to get milk.
The key lock is an electromechanical device, which has a linkage to the driver's door lock, and electrical switches to send lock status to the CCU.
Now while you can in theory activate the mechanical linkage with a servo from an external system, you can't activate the switches in the lock itself, so only the driver's door will unlock.

If it's stood unused for some time, have you synchronised the fobs with the vehicle?

No as nothing worked no fog lights / no wipe / wash no windows working rear tailgate totally dead even after replacing all locks and all window mechanisms so now i have replaced the CCU (body control module) and all works apart from the key fob as it needs reprograming. So i may be going to fit a after market CL module with a seperate fob just to work the driver door to lock not 100% sure it will work but gives me something to do

Decided to have the fob reprogramed all doors except drivers door work needs another driver door lock assembly and done front top mounts .
Just the sun roof to sort but not to bothered about that might just disconnect it and source another dome light as the map lights do not work but the main light does so not the end of the world haven't got a map any more
