Ok, I managed to get the bugger out by myself, but am having a bit of an issue getting the damn thing back in.
In the interrim, it went off to a local transmissions specialist and at present, I have it hoisted to within an inch or two of locating on the captive bolt. But for reasons I'm hoping to be enlightned with, I just can seem to get it to move any closer. It's also about a mm to high and to the side, but I'm sure some additional 'jiggling' will see to that.
My question is; is there something I should know about this procedure? Does the box need to be in high, low or neutral - as it gets so far onto the spline and seems to stop there and I'm wondering if that is a contributing factor? Obviously I don't want to force it. I don't know what position it was in upon return from the shop and it's hard to tell from the selector lever on the box what gear it's in. It's also damn hard to move that lever when not connected to the gear lever assembly and again, I don't want to either damage it or have to lower the box if at all possible. If I have to try and move it manually, I'd rather try it in situ as it was a helluva job to get the box up there in the first place!
