i have taken the egr valve off my disco some while ago but i got thinking the other day how does it work or how is it meant to work, do the gases pass from the exhaust into the manifold or the other way around, if the former is the case how does it overcome the pressure generated by the turbo in the inlet manifold or is the pressure so high in the exhaust it can overcome it i somehow doubt that so how are they supposed to work.

engineer:) :)

the only thing worth thinking about when it comes to EGR is:

'how quick can I get rid of it and how do I go about getting rid of the marmite it left behind'

any other thought is a waste of brain...!

It was ONLY fitted by LR as a panic 'bodge' to satisfy (initially) the US market emmissions regulations !!!

Up side = better mpg, better engine responsiveness
Down side = slightly higher NOx in your exhaust (OMG !!) and slightly slower warm up times from cold

And it shows !!

I must say that I've not really noticed a great deal of difference in responsiveness, but maybe the autobox and my grandad-style of driving are masking that.

Looking forward to better fuel consumption though !!

The difference will vary depending on whether your valve is stuck. Mine is much smoother and quieter (TD5 Auto) since I blanked it, but I'm pretty sure the valve was stuck open. If it was operating properly, it would be closed much of the time so the difference would be less.

Ironically, whilst chatting to a friend of mine who is a LR mechanic (main dealer as well) he says that quite often they will blank the EGR valve off if it plays up or fails as an option instead of replacing it as it is a cheaper option for the customer.

Bizarre that LR should offer a customer a cost SAVING - what ever next ????

I don't believe it - no I mean, I don't believe it !!!!!

maybe, just maybe the're getting prepared for when TATA own them and they have to 'barter'

Imagine, you go into the 'Stealership' and the service manager says . . .

"how much would 'sir' like to pay?"

"I'll tell you what, pay for your service, and we'll chuck in 2 new tyres, and a set of spot lights"

" no . . .sir, I INSIST, have them on us :D "

Hmmm, trouble is, at that point I woke up :( :(
