Rattly fan ?

Hi Forum, we’ve recently bought a 2011 Freelander II, very happy except a metallic rattling - but only when the car is moving. The helpful dealership have changed the fan unit (2 days & full dash out etc) but the clattering noise is still there !!!
When we turn the fan off the clattering goes away - the noise sounds like a loose heat shield. As I said only when the car is moving & only when fan is running. It sounds a bit worse when engine is under strain ie low revs high gear.
Any ideas ???

I've not come across a rattle along with the fan, but a common rattle point is the air intake for the engine.

Not much help but when you turn on the fan does it also open some flaps to direct the air? Could be loose. Does it alter when going from upper to lower vents or other vent positions if there are any?

Presumably the dealer checked the AC compressor and drive belt before stripping the dash out?

Thanks for the reply, that might make sense as it gets worse when the engine warms up - in my mind it then opens a vent to allow outside air into the system ?

Not that I’ve noticed, we tend to leave it on ‘auto’ so it serves all vents.
I’ll give it a try later

Looks like you’ve nailed it, turn the a/c switch off & rattling stops !

Ok, so it's the AC compressor, or an issue with the drive belt components, like the tensioner, or possibly the alternator one way bearing.

Not much of a repair outfit if they can't work out where the noise is coming from.

thanks, they’re primarily a dealership who pass bigger jobs to a nearby workshop.
I’ll pass your suggestions on to them.
