More news…… I called Longstone Tyres (they supply Classic car tyres in general). They told me that the Avon Rangemasters are still being made in the UK and most are supplied direct to Vintage Tyres. So I spoke to Vintage Tyres today and was told that the Rangemaster is not only a radial but is huge, heavy and intended for the power-steered Defender and not suitable for the Series Land Rover. He recommended the Traction Mileage 700 x16 Crossply, as originally standard equipment for the Series. I am going to take their offer of four tyres with free tubes. Good deal and they really look the part.

I've had rangemaster tyres on my 109 for fifteen years. They're fine. A radial is better than a cross ply, and the rangemasters are the same size as the Avon ranger that was fitted as original.
No power steering on the truck, no freewheeling hubs and I'm a lightweight person, yet I find it easy to steer on and off road. So I disagree with the opinion from vintage tyres.

My 2A had traction mileage on when i got it in the early 90s, i thought they looked good
I soon after put rrc wheels on so i could run Michelin xm+s244. They don't 'fit' the look but it was like driving a modern car in comparison

Agree too, don’t know why they would have suggested that, I had the deestone extra traction and very noisy with poor handling, checked the ats website and they not advertising rangemasters any more

That is probably a good choice. I always found Series a better drive with crossplys.
Not wishing to be nosey, but do you mind mentioning a price?
Anything calling itself Vintage tends to be expensive.

I used to use ex MOD bar grip tyres on my work 109" back in the day.
I think I paid 30 quid a tyre, new, but I had to fit them myself.
