Hi all i have a 4ltr petrol p38,the other day i was driving it and it made a banging noise from underneath and about half a mile later it cut out and wouldn't start,i went back for it today and it started and drove fine,could this be the cat on the way out, thanks for any suggestions.

Get it on some test gear. Loss of the cat shouldn't stop you, unless it collapses and stops the exhaust flow, but problems with the cat might have knackered a lambda sensor or two or . . .
