hi got a p38 nonstarter when i turn key starter doesn't turn but when i put direct posi to solenoid it turns does any one now what it could be

Is this Auto or Manual, if Auto, try putting gearshift to "N" and see if you still get no response from starter, possibly faulty inhibitor switch on gearbox. I assume you have good charge in the battery and that you have tried a socket on the crankshaft pulley to check engine turns. Starter may also be weak with age, not having enough power to turn engine over.

I dont have the wiring diagram to hand just now so maybe someone can help with that, you should be able to short the two wires to bypass the switch to test this but dont try this until you have confirmation of which wires you need to check

after examining rave circuit diagrams, it looks like(on a 95 4.0) the becm controls starting
it appears that the gear selector switch has too first register that it is in either park or neutral (look at dash p or n showing?)
if it shows either p or n then the becm sends power to relay 16 in engine bay fuse box to energize it, allowing power to go through the relay via fuse mf2 (30a) down to the starter solenoid,
so if battery voltage is at smaller wire at solenoid, then suspect solenoid
hope this helps

The high current side of the solenoid (the side that feeds the starter motor itself) is always live, the relay only controls the 12v supply to the pull-in coil on the solenoid.

It may be worth checking that when you engage crank on the key, whether there is 12v on the pull-in coil side of the solenoid to establish if the solenoid itself is faulty. Either that or short the high current side of the solenoid to the low-current (pull-in coil) side.

i have a message displaying 35 mph max their is also no spark or fuel starter operating when bridge two wire on starter relay in eng compartment fuse box eng sounds ok no mechanical damage

If there is no check engine light coming on at all when you turn the ignition on you wont get it started, has the battery gone flat??

You need to get someone with a diagnostic machine, like testbook, autologic, rovacom to peform a security code relearn, the BeCM and engine ECU have lost the security code synch between them and this needs to be restored. Once it is you should get it started.

If the BECM has lost the lockset code, "Engine Immobilised" will be displayed on the dash.
My 4.6 was starting intermittently, usually had the problem when cold first thing in the morning. Bought a new starter motor from Island 4X4, cost about £50 from memory. Fitted over 12 months ago-problem solved. Checked the old motor and solenoid was shot. Bought a replacement for £35 and now have a spare starter. Hardest job is getting to the top allen bolt holding the starter to the bell housing-need a 6mm allen key 1/2" drive socket and a couple of extensions. The head of the screw cannot be seen and you have to work blind from underneath.

Are you completely sure of that?? Ive seen 2 separate P38's when ive been annoying, sorry, I mean, hanging around, at my specialists, both with the same problem of engine immobilised due to engine ECU and BeCM falling out and neither of them flashed up ENGINE IMMOBILISED on the message centre. One code resynch later in both instances and all was sorted.

do i have to get a code from land rover to sync both ecu`s together or does the technician with diagnosis machine do it all

thanks everyone getting a elecy technician to look at it today will let you know how i get on what does that 35 mph max mean on display on dash?????

hi every one had technician out we managed to reset alarm system put code in with key and it fired up first time no probs he said it been standing to long and that it being parked by heathrow doesn't help.
does any one know were the Air Suspension Delay Unit is o this 96 p38 cant find it

You got it started with the EKA code?? Were there definitely no messages displayed on the dash??

The air suspension delay timer is under the passenger seat, looks like a tall relay.
