Range rover P38 2.5 DSE Problems

Hi all I am new to this site today and looking to see if anyone has any advice on this problem for me.
Have a range rover 2.5 DSE when the engine is cold i have no problem:) but when the engine gets up to normal runing tempriture and i turn the engine off when i return to it and start it again the engine will start but it will rev up to 2000rpm thn drop to idle speed and the engine check light will constantly stay on untill the engine is cold again thn its fine untill it gets warm again can anyone help please:)

I have had this car since last September and its been fine up until now. Just started it a few weeks ago after going out for a meal and the problem has been with me ever since.

Maybe number four injector either bad connection or duff. Does it have a hot start fitted. Do the glow plugs come on when engine is hot?

No glow plug light does not come on after its warm and I've not fitted a hot start as it seems to crank over really quick, so I was guessing that a hot start kit would not be needed. Do you think that may be the problem then??

When my small garage next to may work plugged it in these were the only codes it gave and no one seems to have a clue:
6 EGH Control
3 Electronic engine stop (ELAB)

I have phoned Landrover today to book it in next week but at £96.00 P/H in labour I am now very worried :eek::eek::eek:

The reason i asked if glows come on is because, if you had an hot start that would explain the high rpm on start from hot. Or if the ECU temp sensor thought the engine was cold. That would put glows on and give same symptoms. If stop solenoid is not working engine would not start so think you can discount that. Nor would it cause high start RPM. Sounds like you have a fuel quantity problem, that would be down to maybe the quantity servo in the pump or more likely a speed sensor playing up. Engine speed is measured by crank sensor and number four injector. Checking the electrical connections to these are good would be the first port of call. Don't have a clue what EGH refers to. Are you sure that's what it was and not EGR?

I will take a little look at those then, to be honest I thought it would go away as these Rangies seem to have more lights and problems than my christmas tree and they all seem to come and go within a few days, though this one seems to have stayed. Looks like Landrover here I come. Wish me luck.

Sorry just seen the bit at the bottom of your message, the garage man was talking about the EGR valve and there is a way to bypass it. Can't quite work out why that would cause this problem. When I had one go on my Peugeot 406 HDi it would go funny on me every time I went through water, it would go into limp home mode for about 15 min and then it would be ok again.

The EGR control is on the scuttle behind the EAS box. Small unit with vac pipes and a filter attached to it. Make sure the vac pipes are good and electrical connections clean and making good contact. One vac pipe from it runs under manifold to exhauster (vac pump) on front of engine. Other goes to EGR valve. The fault must be in the controller. Diagnostics won't know about the mechanical side of things.
 
Right fitted a EGR blanking kit to today in hope that it would cure this £57 later and fault still there. Also I had no service book when I bought the car is there any way of getting a copy service book stamped up ?

If the fault said EGR control fault, that is to do with the EGR controller on the scuttle, blanking the EGR off won't make any difference to that. £57.00 is a lot of money for something you could have done with a 13mm spanner and a coin. Odds on when the new MOT test comes out next year if you fitted one of the straight couplers off Ebay and removed the factory unit, you will have to put it back on to pass test. So don't throw it away. Sealing the inlet pipe with a coin is undetectable. Reference service book, a lot of people would like to do that. It would be deception if you did it and a bit illegal. Unless you know where it was serviced and they did it from their records.
 
Sorry what I ment to say was the previous owner had lost the service book and it had a full history but they only had the car a Year and was unsure on the previous history as they had also moved house during the same year. I just wondered where I could find out it's history to get a new book sorted on it.
As for the fault it is going into Landrover on Tuesday as this is a mistery to be honest. Removing the EGR is only a good thing they should have never been fitted on these cars anyway. Passing the Mot will be no problem but if it is I kept the valve. Will say it does go so much better without it !!!

When the new regulations come in it maybe. You did well to keep the EGR unit. Only place you will get history is the garage/garages it was serviced at.
