Firstly I've never owned either [well recently;) a 3.5 V8 RR 25 years ago], I really want a Defender again but have spent 3 weeks on the PC every hour I'm not asleep or at work and haven't found one. I live in the countryside, I'm cycling to work everyday across country and something I've not done in years [backsides killing me], I've got to get a motor.
I had £7.5k for a defender but don't want to spend that on either in title as they don't seem to hold their money so well, with a budget of £3000 what would you buy?
You seem to get a lot of Range Rover for that:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-LAND...y-p-ex-swap-/221857286762?hash=item33a7b98a6a
Similarly you get a half decent Disco so for a guy that knows nothing about either, what would be better having the same to spend on either one?
Rangies were really juicy but I noticed some have the same diesel engines as Defenders and Disco's, how do they tally up on fuel consumption remembering defenders aren't that brilliant either.
Reliability was something that put me off Disco's in the first place [all the gadgets], I'm guessing it's going to be the same for the RR [or worse].
Petrol or diesel? they're juicy anyway right??

My needs, well I have a vintage tractor I sometimes take to the shows, I have a 2 1/2 ton ifor williams trailer that I over fill with logs and have to haul out of a muddy field a couple of times a year [I've had my 110" in low, diff lock and still had all four wheels spinning:oops:]. Mostly it will be for short journeys back and forth work and down the beach with the dogs.

Cheers for any help in advance and currently watching 7 defenders on ebay and all must be 5 hours plus on a coach.

Ok, so you need a motor because you dont want a sore arse any more... My advice.. Don't by a LandRover. If your "a guy that knows nothing about either" your going to have a REALLY sore arse getting bent over at your local garage every week!

If you actually quite like that kind of thing anyway ;) (some on here know loads about landys and still enjoy being bent over..) then for what your wanting it for get a Disco. They are a really true work horse if you find a good one. The P38 will do all the Disco can but you'll forever worry about getting it filthy.

My 2p worth ;)

Hi W
I've had land rovers for quite a while now [defenders] and had explained the reasons for needing another, I usually fix all my motors myself and have never needed the services of garages [well not in 30 odd years of driving, touch wood].
I can only guess you've had both and are speaking from experience and not hearsay, if it is fact they both are that unreliable and beyond home mechanics to fix perhaps you're right, no one wants to be continually screwed over and that would also explain why they're so cheap on ebay.
Looks like I'm staying on my bike till the right defender comes along, it was just a thought.
Cheers
Brian

Plenty of Discoveries and RR's out there that are sorted and reliable, we've got a couple of D2 V8's and a Defender CSW in the family, none are spectacularly bad but they need looking after the same as another other car.

'Any other car' won't do what they do though.

Disco every time. More comfy than a Defender if you are using it as a daily driver, just as practical unless you are putting sheep in the back, cheaper to buy, less likely to get stolen and shipped to Bongo Bongo land or stripped for parts, just as good off-road unless you are going to the extreme (even then just add good tyres), plenty available.
Just take your time, get one that has been sorted properly (rust issues especially) and ask someone who knows what to look for to go with you.
And like with everything else - Ebay can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

Don't decide on a P38 until you've read up on them (& their many foibles) on this forum.
If you are going for a Disco 2 check the underside thoroughly, I know the oldest is 'only' 17 years but they have a reputation for chassis corrosion.
Personally I would recommend another 3.5 RRC (pref. EFI) but that may be too old for you (also not as grunty as a diesel for towing) & anyway good one's are like rocking-horse whatsit.

For what its worth neither. For £3K your buying trouble. For that you could pick up a good quality S3, ideally with a refurbished engine - petrol. Spare parts n insurance are diddly. Maintenance very easy. You will have an independent dealer somewhere nearby. Avid e bay. Bet ya wish you still had yet RR. I too liive in the country and cycle, but I do not have a sore arse - new saddle perhaps?

:p I hadn't been on a bike for years so think I got a bit tender in my old age, plus the seats like a razor edge and the pot holes round here are unreal:eek:

Getting either RR or Disco was just a thought, I think this is probably the 3rd time I've enquired about discos on here and each time got swayed off, guess I should hang on in there till the right defender comes along;)

Cheers all
Brian

I've a 110 defender for sale in the sale section on here that will do all you need of it and more for less than your £7500

I had a look John and it was the same as I'd had before only older dearer and a little rougher round the edges;)
You had done a lot of work on the off road side of things but it was stuff that I was never going to need [just been back for a look, think you did more underside than topside!]
Nice truck but not the one for me mate, I don't go anywhere I might get it scratched

For you what you say you need it for I would get a RR cus they're a lot more luxury inside, but not for 3k, i'd spend a lot more on it, prob the whole 7.5k and get a really nice 1. or you could get a half decent D3 for that if you look hard enough.

Couldn't afford to that, I'd have nothing left for when it went wrong

I offered the dealer £7,5k cash for this but he said he couldn't do it:(

Mind you I only hear bad things about these engines anyway:rolleyes:

I'm surprised he said no but you're prob better off that he did cus you wouldn't of had any money left over to fix that either.

The 300tdi is a much better engine, or go even better and get a td5

My last one was a Td5 and I preferred that to the 300tdi I had before though others say this was better [think they mean easier to fix]

I've been holding out for the later commercial 110's as you do seem to get a lot for your money, trouble is they're all plus VAT! been a lot of 2005's and 2006's but they do sell quick and not having a motor I can't exactly shoot straight over. Last time round it took me 8 hours on buses and trains to get to York [about 80 miles] only to find out the seller had lied through his teeth, that day cost me close on £200 in fares:(
I try not to let that happen again so ask for more details/pics and am then regarded as a time waster, you know the buyer now has to beg for more information!

think the 300 tdi is better to fix, my bro has a 300tdi defender but he keeps saying how my td5 in my disco is better.

get someone that owns their own business to buy it for you then you can claim the VAT back ;)

maybe you might be better off advertising in the wanted section, someone on here has prob got a half decent one they need to sell.

ps you could just get a 110 van, and put the commercial bits in yourself (like the sliding side door compartments etc)

Cheers for that.
I've sat here for three weeks outside work and sleep and found nothing, I have wanted ads on here and a couple of other places.
I hate the position I put myself in between motors, can't buy the next till this ones gone, when this ones gone you can't get to see the next. I guess living in the middle of nowhere has it's downsides ;)
Back to the grind [well ebay LoL]
