Hi guys i got a range rover p38 4.6 gems model 1996 the thing doesn't want to start or if it managed to start doesn't rev over 2-3k I removed the oil filter on the range when you crank it oil is not pumping out from were the filter is normally mounted to. does this mean the oil pump is gone or could the pressure relief valve cause this or is it not meant to throw any oil out from here when cranking.

You have a big problem, there should be oil everywhere if there is no filter on it. Oil pressure relief valve relieves excess pressure when oil is cold it can't relieve pressure that's not present.

I am a little intrigued as to why you took the oil filter off for what is usually an ignition/fuel problem....

If you get it runing disconnect the maf if it settles down you need a new one.

As to your no oil problem is there any in the sump?

i took it off because i have been trying to fix the range for a while i have checked i have spark and fuel i can get it to start by spraying easy start into the inlet manifold

the sump was removed to check there wasnt any sludge in the pick up but was clear i then fitted a new oil filter and new oil after having it start for 10-15 mins i checked the oil filter there was not that much oil in there jus a few drips so makes me think its the pump or oil pressure relif valve.

does the p38 gems system stop you from reving the range if there is very little or no oil pressure.

is there some sort of safety device to stop you messing the engine up, as in stops the petrol pump if you have no oil pressure. because if you keep your foot on the acelerator near 2-3 k revs the engine shuts down as if the pumps stops

so that means its def the oil pump thats gone then

can this be changed with out taking the engine out? and any idea on the cost ot the pump

Sounds like you may have a couple of probs. Poor starting and not revving would make me think crank sensor. When it does run does the oil light go out? And does it rattle like a bag of spanners?

i would say it doesnt sound like how it use to sounds like only running on certain cylinders. so yeh does sound ruff

the oil pressure light goes out as soon as it starts.

il try and see if i got a spare sensor

im gonna have to say check your coil pack, if its only firing on say 2,3 or even 4 cylinders this could be the reason. i had a similar problem and it turned out to be the coil pack.

I would be looking at the ignition side also. You can check the coil packs for arcing by turning it over in the pitch dark and watch for blue flashes. Also it's not unknown for the stator ring on the flywheel to have bent tangs that can cause a miss reading. Check all the connection for corrosion right back to the main ecu, again it's not unknown for corrosion to be present where you wouldn't expect it.

this has been fixed guys had to take it in to a specialist garage called london range rovers they managed to fix it in 4 hours which was quick and even got it M.o.T while it was there turned out to be the fuel pump was partly working so was faulty i had originally brought a second hand pump of ebay which was worn aswel.

they fitted a brand new one which sorted everything out driving like before nice and smooth

Hi,
There is a thread about the rear fuel pump.Check if there are bubbles in the plastic hose from the diesel filter. If yes, than You should change the rear fuel pump.I had problem to start the engine for several days .Now is OK.
