Hi - if you were to buy a used Range Rover, a 3rd generation model from 2008-2011, where would you search for one in North East or would you travel anywhere in UK to get a one with great history? I’m sure there must be some go-to companies out there.

Also would you advise having the AA do one of their checks over a car pre purchase or is there anyone independent providing this type of insight?

What big service items to ask about at key age/mileage milestones?

Thanks all

Isn't that personal choice? Do you want to go anywhere in the UK? Or do you want to stay local?
I don't know of any 'go to companies'. However, an internet search will bring up lots of 2nd hand Land Rover dealers. You can also use any of the search sites, such as autotrader, motorpoint, etc.

Yes , if you dont know what to look for pay for AA, RAC , or an independent. Yes there are independents, again I don't know any off hand. I got my last sourcer using an internet search. An internet search engine should help you find one.

Loads. Some of our members like to write them out over and over again, every time this question is asked. Me, I like to help people to help themselves, and point them to the search bar. With the advice, it is all there, it has all been answered before , so search, read and digest.

Thanks all
Other than that , welcome and good luck in your search. :)

Thanks for the guidance. I’ll dig deeper into the archives. I think from what I’ve read that the 3.6 TDV8 is a good option over the earlier 3.0 or later 4.4 TDV8.

Seen a couple of good targets with sub 70k mileages and full LR service history. Checked MOT history on line and all clear which seems to good to be true. Downside is I’m stuck in PCP until December unless I try to sell and pay off the balance...

I’ve created links to all Landrover dealers listed in last months LR owner mag. Nene also but they’re more Defender focussed than Rangers.

Plan is to spend 85% of my budget and Keep back 15% for bills..

One question. If one was to buy a RR with an MOT done by the garage supplying, is there anything to prevent one from getting another ‘independent’ MOT done to check if earlier MOT was accurate and it advisories appear on second MOT to claim the work under warranty? I just keep seeing warranties for 3-6 months but know some gremlins probably won’t show until the next MOT way after warranty expired.

Thanks

Diagnostics is a great point but how to achieve that pre purchase. Would AA do it or how much are the devices these days?

Can a seller clear codes so they don’t show up or if there is a fault will it still show?

Thanks

I have a different RR, but with an earlier version of that engine. Very different earlier version though.

Chains Vanos would be ideal. If it runs okay then should be fine. I wouldn’t buy one without driving it myself, should go straight like a train no wobbling, gearbox goes through all gears - no warnings on dash, pulls and stops like it weighs same as a crisp packet

There are plenty of nightmare stories of the models you are looking at, but a good one will last many years with a little maintenance.

Codes cleared will show straight back up if there is still a fault. (Not all faults produce a code but mainly minor ones or mechanical - there is no prop shaft/flat tyre code etc) .
Faults can show up from engine sensors, gearbox or EAS suspension but they run off separate systems so may need different diagnostics. With RRs a lot of things even a bulb will come up on the dash message screen when you put the key in

If u don’t mind me adding what the other kind members have said , having ur own diagnostics is a great bargaining tool along with a must with modern landies for the future ownership

When I bought my D3 he was claiming it hasn’t been worked on for months and in excellent condition

His face was a picture when he returned after talking to another customer with my iPad in my hand and at the time cheap code reader plugged in, there were fault code after fault codes which showed me at what mileage they appeared

Think it may have been the only time a salesman was speechless

If ur planning to own a modern landy u will save urself a fortune having ur own decent diagnostics , pay for them selves very quickly , inc the convenience of having one at hand 24/7

Lastly couldn’t agree more ref having an AA/ RAC inspection , they are very complicated and need to be carefully looked at prior to purchasing or u can find you’ve just bought a money pit

As an addit to my earlier reply. I would also say, if the seller feels dodgy, trust your gut. Check your warranty with a fine tooth comb. There is always the chance that no matter how hard you look, you might miss something. That is when the warranty becomes the most important thing.

You seem to be going the right way.
I’d prefer get it plugged into diagnostics and read for codes as a check. Particularly gearbox.

Vanos, chains serviced already would be nice at that mileages if you find a nice one.

I’d like to develop maintenance skills to do my own service and repairs (up to a base level). What’s the best way to learn the skills? I’d even pay for a night class or weekend training in NE area. Not sure what is out there yet

Best thing to do is stick with us ;)

I knew nothing a year ago!

bought a RR that no ‘professional’ seemed able to pinpoint the issues or fix.
I’ve read search bar on here most nights and things like RAVE (TOPIX or something for yours), I start threads with pictures as I’m doing things and the members here have shared their experience and wisdom.

They don’t just tell me what needs doing, they help me understand to the point I just fix it all myself now for fraction of the cost and I know it’s done to a high standard.
Worst case is I get out of my depth and a local garage will have to do it for me - not happened yet and my Landy now goes better than one I could have bought for top money.

One example I’ve had if you check my threads - UJ on shaft ; quoted £140 to take shaft out, replace UJ and refit.
With help on here I got a HD UJ for £13.90, took me 15mins to change

I knew nothing a year ago!

And that means what now?:D:D:eek:

For the OP.

Welcome:)

How are you getting on have you got 1 yet?
We went to Germany to get ours  it had some LR warranty left though.

Most collages do night school on basic car maintenance,(or used too) won’t cover a car as complex as the RR but most principals are similar.

As @RangeRoller dt ask on here before doing the job ask for advise and quirks of the RR and to make sure you have correct tools/part before attempting the job. If you do get stumped during the job, stop make a cuppa and ask on here.
Oh I know diagnostics has been mentioned but it’s not a luxury item it’s a must for these modern cars.

Good luck with it when you have it. An independent inspection is a good idea and pretty sure you could ask them to read for any codes if you prewarned them.

It means I will need the diesel gurus help, again, before long :D

Corrected that for you:)

How’s my therapy going? Have you just shoved my suitcase under the bed and forgotten about how relaxing it was:)

I have just been lucky and if maintenance is kept on top of it’s surprising how many surprises you don’t get:)
Get the problems early don’t let the little problems mount up.

I’ve had so much on not had time. Now that my P38 doesn’t break down anymore I can actually go places and do things :)

... yes ... ...

It’s under the bed ....
but got your name on it and it’s not like I’m ever gonna forget you

Therapy is the correct term ;)

This is great. I’ll look into the info on hear in more detail. Like you say some things are straight forward and you can save the big labour costs by investing the time to do it and feel good that you’ve done it and it’s done right!

Totally agree with your post, this site, and of course the members, are unbelievably helpful with RR problems. I like to pick a few brains on here then check out YouTube for vids on how to do it. I'll not be changing engines or diving into wiring looms, but I've managed to sort a few things out that have given me a real sense of achievement. Welcome to the site and good luck.
