Range rover l322 2002 4.4 vogue wont change down gear when going up hill

Hi all,

i was travelling with no probs or no errors on the dash until we hit a hill and as we were on the incline the gears never changed down and the incline got too great and the car stalled so i turned the ignition off and re started the vehicle and it changed up fine e.g 1,2,3,4,5 etc but again when the car had to change down again on a incline e.g 5,4,3,2,1 etc it stalled there still were no errors coming up on the dash has any one had any experience like this or know any fixes any ideas would be much apprieciated thanks!

Check the auto fluid level isn't to low.
When was it last serviced?

When you say the vehicle 'stalled' do you mean that the engine was still running but it didn't have the power to keep going on the hill because it was stuck in too high a gear?

When the transmission ECU detects a problem with the ZF 5HP24 transmission it locks it into 4th gear with the torque converter open. However, you would have expected it to flag the 'TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG' message on the instrument panel (unless your pixels have gone - but that's another story!). When you key-off the ignition it resets the ECU until the problem is detected again.

Does it work if you use manual gear change mode???

sible88 got it serviced last month how do i check auto fluid level?
Bemble- yeah it basically got stuck in high gear and wouldnt change down so it stalled and yes my pixels need doing but it normally bleeps if there is an error.
Garioch43- yes it does work in manual mode.
my water level was low and it was on that last hot day we had i topped it up andso far it hasnt happen again could that have been a problem with the gear box i heard that a blockage in the rad can cause the gearbox to overheat but that should also come up on the message board i did see it once in my old p38

Hi all, i have got myself in a sticky situation my l322 battery went flat on me so last night i locked the vehicle with bonnet open and this morning the battery went flat again i tried to open it with the key for and the front passenger door pin came up and drivers window went down about 5mm but because i had the bonnet open already i just hooked it up with jump leads as i normally have in the past and i noticed the passenger door pin went down and drivers window went up and now i can't open the vehicle with the key fob just alarm lights are flashing any help will be greatly appreciated
