Hi All
Could really do with some help here.
I've got a 1984 3.5 auto four door
I'm wanting to change my front and rear axles/diffs as i do alot of open road driving and would like to get my fuel bill down.
Does anyone know of a easy change over from any other make/model?
Cheers Gary

Think you"ll find range rover diffs are highest ratio you can get, series land rover guys use them to gear up landys after fitting more powerful engines. Not sure about transfer box ratios think maybe auto has highest one of them as well, maybe a case of driving bit slower or gas it.

thanks,
i've heard either toyota or nissan diffs been used but am not sure which or how much modifing needs to be done

Well changing diffs has gone out the window as the people i found that have change to nissan diff still run the same ratio.

so how do i get this to be affordable on long trips??? go japp diesel?

Wear a slipper on your right foot...

Your driving a brick shaped 2 ton lump of metal with a great stonking engine, it ain't never gonna be sipping fuel!

Switching to manual box might give marginal improvement over auto with careful driving, and I think Disco has slightly higher transfer ratio, but the cost of this work unless you have the bits knocking around, is not likely to recoup it's value in the remaining practical lifetime of the car.

You don't state the model year, but if you have a ZF auto the overdrive top/converter lock set-up actually gives you a marginally higher overall ratio than the 5 speed manual. If you raise the gearing you'll wind up (no pun intended) with a more gutless motor that could actually use more fuel not less. I would'nt recomend going LPG, especially if you have a 3.9/4.2ltr. & even then you can burn a whole lot of unleaded for what the conversion will cost. Nothing personal (because I'd say this to any-one) but if you can't afford to run it.............
