Hi and a happy new year

I know there are similar threads on the site
I have a range rover hse (year 2000) with a bmw diesel that will not start
I put a new battery on it and now it turns over fires a little but will not run
When I turn the key I can here the fuel pump ticking
I had connected a battery meter that dropped when pre heating so I assume they are working
There is fuel in the clear line between the filter and pump and after a lot of cranking I get diesel smoke (not white)
The other thread said press the switch driver’s foot well no change
Have I missed any thing of Do I need a pc to reset the onboard computer

yes will do,
i might check i have diesel at the injectors in the morning if i can get a spanner to fit

still not starting used easy start fired a bit then back to just cranking
i will have a look at preheaters later

it now runns but will only start with easy start. fitted new glo plugs but i have found a small pipe behind the pump it looks like a vacuum pipe it is about 10 " long rubber inner with a soft reinforced outer one end looks like it is connected to the air intake

is it this one marked with the red arrows?

as you look at the picture the fuel filter is in the foreground. on the left hand side as you look at it on my pic there is a square piece of plastic. its at a bit of an angle and has a connector coming from the left hand side. On the underside of this plastic cube there should be a small pipe sized outlet. the pipe shown by the red arrows connects to here.

I have the same problem on my 2.5 DT, 1996. Will not start now, just cranking over. Smoke/diesel smell coming from exhaust when cranking so must be getting fuel? Where and what is this reset button you mention? Would this be on a 96 model? Cheers

Hi
the button is on the right in the drivers foot well, if you look on the right side wall about half way down their is a plastic circle about 3 cm across with a screw head with a slot in it . turn this and put your finger in the hole you should find a rubber boot press it (down i think) you should feel it click
hope this helps

Cheers for that. But no joy, it was already down, and still wont start!
Could a faulty crank sensor stop it from starting? I did unplug it the other day changing the starter motor, but fired up fine afterwards, then did not fire at all the next morning. Is there anyway of testing the crank sensor? Would I need a special tool to set the position of the sensor if I changed it?

it wont be the crank sensor it will start and tickover at about 2500 rpm and the rev counter wont work if that is shagged woulsuggest fueling problem if it is intermitant airlock or fuel return best guess

still having starting problems. to date changed glo plugs, new fuel filter turns over for ages the startes i can here the fuel pump running (ticking) when it turn the key this stopes after a short time so it must be getting fuel once it has started it runns ok and startes first time every time untill i leave for over about 10 hours. i think it could be getting air in the fule (no air bubles in the clear pipe or the fule is running back to the tank. has any one had this problem if so how did you get over it

I would be tempted to loosen the nut on the top of the injector, dont remove it though, just enough to see if it weeps diesel when you are trying to start it. just to eliminate air in the system

i assume that the fuel is running back to the tank
Is there a seal in the fuel system that might go and let air in

i read a thread on he about fitting a one way/non return valve in the fuel line to over come this, that could be an option.
