RADIOS

could some one help me please. looking to fit some sort of thing to get some tunes in my landy. is it possilbe to wire in just speakers and an AUX cable rather than say a radio so i can just plug my phone in ? or do speakers need some form of circuit board to them. IE the radio ?, if it needs a radio to do this how do i wire a radio into a landy? could i wire a modern radio in easily that has blue tooth ? where can i put the radio? where do i put the speakers ? etc thanks (PS its a series 3 1981 swb)

You really need some form of amplifier between your phone and speakers if you want decent volume so a radio is the easiest solution. You can get cheap ones that support aux input. Where to mount it is up to you, a proper job will require some cutting/drilling for mountings. What Landy have you got? I put a radio in my series 3 but the sound quality wasn't great because it's basically a big drum full of squeaks, bangs and rattles. Eventually I tried a rechargable wireless speaker that can Bluetooth to my phone and it has a built in radio and stereo speakers. I just put this on the middle seat and remove it when I'm not using the landy. A full charge lasts ages and being portable means I can take it anywhere to use, such as my shed or garage.

I have a modern blue tooth radio in the centre above the windscreen with a shelf and speakers in the roof. It means you can fit it all without modifying the dash. the power wire goes up the centre of the screen. You can screw intot the roof or fit rivnuts under the capping strips where they are invisible. Don't expect to hear it though, at least not if its a diesel, we have military (Bowman) headsets wired in as well. Still not that sucessfull and the next step is to get a rally intercom and connect the mikes so we can talk. At them moment the only way to get attention is a firm tug on the headset lead, effective but annoying.

I must admit when I saw the title of this thread I thought it was April 1st come early.
The sort of amplification I would need in mine would drain the battery. And even if I could get it loud enough without exploding my eardrums I would rather be able to listen to all the knocks, rattles and whines just in case a new one starts............

Bluetooth sets without a head unit are available. You simply bury the box in a convenient spot, wire in a fused live and connect your speakers. The whole thing is controlled by your phone.
Speakers can be mounted in the dash, behind your head on each side of the back, in the top corners above the rear door or on the bulkhead behind the seats.
I have adequate soundproofing so my wireless is fine. I have speakers in the custom dash and above the rear door. My radio is fitted in an overhead console with most of the other electrics.
I can sit and listen to my Mantovani with ease. I also have s hands free phone but never use it. Mostly coz nobody likes me.

My radio and speakers , can here it over engine especially since fitting headlining.Has usb port phone can be coupled to but I use a micro usb for my music.

mines a petrol lol so not as bad . there is a random wire going up the centre of my windscreen wonder if some tryed this idea before i had it?

could very easily be. infact i remember now , thats what i decided to wire it to lol

Interior light wire and 4 speaker cables are behind cover of centre rib of windscreen

Is that a heated rear screen I see? Does it work?

If you want a very simple solution then buy something like one of these:

It will sit in the series dash quite happily, costs from 20quid sounds very reasonable and can be charged from a cig lighter socket or just use the internal battery which lasts about 7 hours. Blue tooth from your phone/ipod or plug a device in with w 3.5mm - 3.5mm lead.
Works for me.

Rob yes heated rear screen bought from Paddocks not that effective element sits on surface of glass and I managed to damage one of the lines with some stuff loaded in back of Landrover.
Got a discovery wiper motor [shortened the wiper arm] and a screenwash fitted also but to be quite honest would not do it again. Works but not necesary as door mirrors more reliable.

I see Raptor skimped on a product photographer.

I saw some door trims somewhere with provision for speakers. Would be an alternative to putting them in the lower dash, Defender-style.

Mudstuff do their centre console which can be made to fit a series 3 and gives you space to relocate the switches/ warning lights from the original auxiliary panel and add a couple of gauges. If you don't have anything there, they do an underslung pod for mounting a radio similar to the original defender moulding.
