hi all have a 53 reg 1.8 freelander. with ac. in the 5 months ive owned it
the fan has never come on.
did a 900 mile round trip and court up in a slow jam for 1.30 hours the gauge stayed half way all the time (when engine reaches normal temp).
so today i took the wire of the temp sender and nothing happened (ign on)
made a join wire to connect the 2 wires in the plug and still nothing.
is there just 1 sender on my model or 2.
the only one i can find is right hand side of the engine just in front down a bit
(nice and tekky for you).
also with the engine running and ac on no fan cut in.
have put a supply to both fans and they work fine.
will never us ac so no loss there.
there is a live feed to both fans so fuse i good (80 amp) so im happy to put a relay on the return side and a switch so i can Manuel turn it on.
or is the still hope for that the ecu is working and ive just got the wrong sender. but the ac fan should of worked unless it new the engine was not hot anothe.
thanks any way t

Aircon fans only come on if the aircon has gas in it on most cars, assuming you car also has a separate engine cooling fan. I don't know the Freelander.
You should always use the aircon on a car full of electronics as it keeps the interior dry, electronics and LR connectors hate damp.

Shorting wires together if you do not know what you are doing is a good way of destroying ECU's

no shorting involved unplugged the fans and put a new supply to them.
aparranty AC is on all the time you have got air going to the screen.
and it doe blow cold

You said you shorted the sensor wires together.
It should not necessarily blow cold as the air is reheated after the aircon to achieve the required temperature.
Is there a separate radiator cooling fan or just the aircon fans?

yup but none work
You need to look at wiring diagrams to see what triggers them. As I said, aircon fans will not operate if there is no gas in the system unless they also serve for engine cooling.
If there are 2 coolant sensors (as there is on the P38), you may have checked the wrong one for the engine cooling and as the temperature stayed at normal there would be no need for the engine cooling fan to come on.
I run my P38 without the mechanical fan and just electric fans, they almost never operate at this time of year even when waiting in traffic.

If you have had a 1.8 freelander , for 5 months , its probably about the right time to trade it in on a diesel , while the cold weather is here , and you still have a head gasket !
