Quick question regarding glow plugs

Hi guys and girls :) I've just taken the plunge and bought a 71 series 3 diesel 2.25 3 bearing and started to cross a few little jobs of list :)

I spent most of yesterday investigating why my glow plugs weren't working , and found that two of the old style "pig tail " glow we're damaged and as they were wired in series , I believed that to be the problem ....... But no luck :confused:

So I thought I'd treat the old girl to an upgrade and fitted the Brit part new style plugs wired in parallel , but still no joy :confused: after a few hours of digging around and double checking the wiring diagram here's my question :)

I have doubled checked all connections and clean earth points and straps , checked continuity of all wires from plugs to back of ignition switch and starter solenoid and found no open circuits or broken wires , so ........ If I still have no power getting to the big brown and red wire coming off the back of my ignition switch which feeds the glow plugs , is my starter solenoid broken or my ignition switch fubar

The Landy starts with no plugs , just wanted to fix it before winter :)

Any advice greatly appreciated :D:D
 
That was my first thought :) had some shocking parts from Brit part in past , but I've gone all over the wring with a multimeter and can't find any breaks , just no power getting to the wire from ignition switch :-(
 
No joy , switch works as it should :-( slightly high resistance , cured by cleaning contacts. 12v live at "in" feed just no power at all to supply for glow plugs :-( I'm at a loss now :-( any advice greatly appreciated
 
There's power in 12.8v and switch makes all contacts ( 1, 2, and starts the engine )

But no power to big brown and red wire which feeds ( switched live to glow plug resistor)

I can only assume that the power in , is feed from starter solenoid ?
 
Thank you Dr Evil for all your help :) went back and re-checked those high resistance readings , ignition barrel is on its way out :-( I'll order a new one from paddocks in the morning
 
If it's the new type, wired in parallell then you don't need to use the ballast resistor (that's how mine is and there's no problems!
I guess you know, but a good 15-20 of heat is usually used to start it!, when the engine cranks is it slow? I.e. Is your battery big enough (I know it's a 12v one but can it produce enough amps?)

useful mod imo is using a push button switch for the glows.. like a starter button

easier to hold for whatever length in the winter.

you just need a little bit of power connected to a relay which can get a thick cable from the starter motor

also having all that juice through the ign probably helped cook the ign in the first place :)
