Hi all,

My indicators stopped working, so I'm fault finding at the moment, but one thing seems to puzzle me.

Is the indicator relay and the hazard indicator relay the same relay?

The reason for the confusion is that I cannot find a separate indicator (flasher) relay in the Haynes manual. It shows the hazard flasher relay, but not a separate flasher relay. I know this might be a very daft question, so please be gentle with the p155 taking. :D I've been trying to find a new indicator relay on the net, I thought it would be easy, especially for an old-design as the Defender, but apparently there's several relays.

I've checked the indicator stalk, and they do give connection, the hazards work, and I can feel the relay clicking (so I know which relay that is). I didn't check the hazard switch, Hazard Switch & Indicators - fault diagnosis - Defender Forum - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum I'll go do that right now.

Anyway, if someone could tell me where the indicator relay is, or if I should stop looking as I've already found it because it's the same as the hazard relay, I'd really appreciate it. :)

Thanks!

Indicator relay is the one tucked behind the fuse panel, on a 300tdi at least.
should be a 2x21+5 (+2x21)
usual fault, if the hazards work but the indicators dont is the hazard switch,

Thanks for the reply! You're right about the relays (and flasher relay).
On my 1999 TD5 there's two relays behind the fuse panel. One's the wiper relay and the other one is the flasher relay. The hazards and the normal indicators use the same flasher relay.
This time the problem was the indicator stalk. I got a new one from Mark Smith Land Rovers in Bicester. They had it in stock at under £55. It's a genuine Lucas one, same as Paddock Spares had for about £45.

All works fine now, except indicating to the right, it's hard to engage and cancels too early - I believe I didn't put the steering wheel on properly into the tabs. I'll try to check that today if the bl**dy rain stops for a second.

Also, I need to update my other question about indicators not cancelling, but I'll put it in here too as it might be of some use; if one direction of the indicators cancel properly, but the other one doesn't it's likely that one of the cancel-prongs in indicator stalk assembly have broken off. There's basically two prongs (left + right) that get pushed in by the bumps on the steering column - these cancel the indicators when the steering wheel is rotated "against them". One of my prongs had broken off, and therefore right hand indicating didn't cancel and sometimes left me going down the road looking like a man in 90s driving a Vauxhall Viva. The solution is a new indicator stalk thingy.
Hope that helps someone.
